45-70 Questions??

Page 1 of 2Next

Hello Everyone,I have just purchased  a Marlin 1895 SDT in 45-70-Stainless Steel w/Laminate Stock and a 16 1/4" barrel;I will be using the LeverEvolution as my Hunting load.Who else out out there is shooting a 45-70-amd what success are y'all having?. Thanks for your time.

Bob

You'll have to find a 45-70 die set with a seating stem specifically for the pointed leverlution bullets.

Wondering when Dillon will make a black powder approved powder dispenser.

I have a handi-rifle in 45-70, and I reload the ammo for it.  I was using Hornady FTX factory ammo, and I reload with the same bullet.  I have a set of Lee dies, and have had no trouble loading the FTX.  You are going to find that factory ammo for the 45-70 is pretty anemic, I guess because of all the older guns out there that won't handle a Big Pow.  If you decide to reload, go to hornady.com for reloading specs on the 325 grain FTX bullet.   That bullet is not in the latest edition of their handbook.

howdy  bob    i got the 45-60 uberti . +im in the process of developing a load for it . I intend to work up a load for it that i can take deer with at a resonable range.                     saltgrade

Good morning gentelmen,

I love the 45-70.  Each of my rifles use fire formed Winchester brass except for the Quigley 1874 Sharps replica.  That one uses Rem. plated brass and 500 grain lead paper wrapped bullets over a lubed felt wad that rides over a .o3" fiber wad sealer.  The case holds 63 grains of Goex FFG and holds 2 MOA off of sticks.  Cowboy long range fun only.

The 1895 Cowboy: 67 grains of Triple 7 under a gas checked 405 grain slug gives me 1.5" off sticks.  Cowboy long range fun only.

The 1895-SS (not stainless steel) puts 3 Hornady 350 grain Flat Nose slugs inside a fat thumbnail size group at 100 yd using enough IMR 3031 powder set off with a standard Win. LR primer for 1850 feet per second.  The recoil will hurt you and don't even consider using this load in any older rifles.  This is the very best of brush guns you can own for shots out to 150 yards without holding over or under.  Set the sights to put the bullet one inch over at 100 yds.  The energy will take deer size animals out to  150 reliably with well placed shots.  When you get into heavy brush for Moose, Brown bear and the like this is my go-to weapon.  My other heavy game  rifle for open terrain, long range, dangerous game is a Ruger #1 .375 H&H.

The best read for the 15-70, IMHO, is Paul Green's "40 years with the 45-70".  Great read.  Enough said.  Deadeye Ashley.

Bob,
I was at the range this week with my Marlin 1895 (a.k.a. Mabel) in 45-70 . I was feeding her some of that factory LeaverEvolution & she wouldn't put any thing on paper ... Then I feed her some hand-loads of the LeaverEvolution /I.M.R. powder that was just a whisper hotter than the factory & some shinny Starline nickle plated brass ,as well as using Hornady spec. for the case trim length ... That's when Mabel started putting a pattern the size of my open hand , a little tweaking here & there ,maybe a little trigger work or polishing job to ease up on the heavy pull . I hope this time next year me & Mabel can do a 3 shot hole .

I shoot a 45-70 Trapdoor Springfield 1865 Cadet model.
It shoots very well with 35 grains of smokeless under a 405 or 350 grain chunk of lead.  It makes a nice hole in BOTH sides of a pumpkin and hits anything you can hold it on.
I reload the shells at the range with a Lee hand loader.  The entire reloading kit and components fits in a 30 caliber Ammo can except for the mallet needed to operate the loader.

I did make a mess by using 70 grains of black powder instead of 35 grains of smokeless.  It left a mess but the cloud was fun.

mine loves cast bullets... best bullet so far was the Lee Precision hollow base... drops from the mold at 385gr... i use data for the .405 to load... Distinct preference for Remington LRP, IMR 3031 or 4198 both work well... Rocks the 300M gong plate with no problems...

Redding has a great set of dies for this round including a crimp die made just for the ftx bullet and its shorter case length. F.y.i. these bullets shoot a little high and punch through just about anything.
