Grease type?

Page 1 of 2Next

I know this question has probably been asked before but no one has answered it.

I know that Dillon states they use Schafer grease for the Zirk grease ports, but which one? 229? 274? 221?

Also, I noticed a red grease on the plastic parts of the XL650. Does anyone recommend a brand that makes a grease for these parts? I know some greases can have adverse effects over the years on plastics.

Thank you for your help!

Schafer 229, NAGL1

What is NAGL1?

Thanks!

Frank

No idea. It was in the description the engineer gave me.

"NAGL1" isn't anywhere on google, amazon or at my local hardware store.

Looking on the Schaefer site it shows 229 as available as NLGI grade 1 or grade 2 type grease. Which is National Lubricating Grease Institute which lists 9 grease consistency numbers.

NLGI number, ASTM worked (60 strokes) penetration at 25 °C
tenths of a millimeter, Appearance, Consistency food analog

000, 445-475, fluid, cooking oil
00, 400-430, semi-fluid, apple sauce
0, 355-385, very soft, brown mustard
1, 310-340, soft, tomato paste
2, 265-295, "normal" grease, peanut butter
3, 220-250, firm, vegetable shortening
4, 175-205, very firm, frozen yogurt
5, 130-160, hard, smooth pate
6, 85-11,5 very hard, cheddar cheese

Which might be what the engineers meant and just miss typed. That you need it in Grade 1 and not Grade 2.

If you choose to use the Schafer 229 No. 1 or 2, be sure you never use it for a wheel bearing application.

Using Lucas Marine Grease and haven't had any issues (grade 2). It's also Blue in color.

I use Lucas red "n" tacky on parts that need grease

Been using Super lube for grease . 30 weight oil on ram
