primers not in line with case

Page 1 of 2Next

I just started loading 38 special for the first time on this new xL650. I love this machine, only I am at a loss to why primers don't always line up when seating at the case. On 100 rounds, I lost 12 primers, bent or seat sideways in case. Not happy with that at all. Its hard to find #100 federal primers. A new machine should not do this. My square Deal doesn't do this. Any Ideas on how to stop this from happening? Dale.

Dale,

Make sure the shellplate isn't too tight.

I had that happen last night and the shellplat bolt was too tight. It only seemed to affect one position.

If you continue to fight this, I'd call Dillon support and as them; they're pretty good about kinowing this stuff off-hand.

I had ALOT of priming system glitches on the SDB. Most of them went away with this 650.

Thanks Randy, I tried as you said about the shell plate. It did work better.
Primers do seat better, although I do still have some primer seating problems at times. I loosened the plate bolt at least one & a half turns, and seat primer slowly. Most seat well, a few I must play with a little. You would think a new 650 should not give trouble at all, work well every time.
I'm sorry I'm just getting back to answering you on this, shooting a lot of matches these days. Thanks, Dale+++

The shellplate bolt should be very close to tight;we suggest tightening it until it stops, then back it up 1/8 to 1/4 turn is al. If you push down  on the edge of the shellplate at station 4, but should not feel springy. What brand of brass are you loading?I suggest phoning us for assistance when you can be in  front of the machine.

Are you by any chance using military cases with crimped in primers?  These will cause hard primer insertion and could be a problem.

Thank you dillon for your help with this primer problem. I have backed up the shell plate bolt  as you said, and so far the primers are seating ok. If I have any more problems, I will call you. Thanks, Dale+++
  ( I'm using winchester 38 special Brass)

Please keep us updated on this. I am having similar problems with my 650 while loading .45 ACP using commerical (not military-crimped) brass. When I had it set up to load 9mm, everything was fine.

I will definitely try the shell plate trick tomorrow.

so far most primers seat well. although once in awhile some do not, have to turn brass a little then primer will seat. some brass  I have to take out,   and take out primer also. real troublesome, don't like playing around with, just want to get on with loading.+++

You may want to check the adjustment on the Primer Station locator Tab.  There is a adjustment screw that can be set to insure that the round is held firmly in the station.  I see this same problem when loading .223.  If the tab is not set correctly, i get exactly what you are experiencing.

Thank you    Anm2 man     for the info on the primer station locater tab adjustment  screw to hold case tight in station.Small screw to find, but find I did and made the adjustment. Did not need to adjust it much, but it made a difference. Only had one primer try to seat on angle out of 120 rounds, but got it anyway. Case wasn't hardly loose at all, but so far has made a big difference. Thanks,  Dale.+++
