1500 Trimmer

I have a 1500 case trimmer on a 223 die, the problem I'm having is swelling of the case rim. This i mounted on a Hornady Lock & Load Press.

1) I have checked the cases with case gauge prior to trimming after
2 after trimming the rim of the case is swollen and will not fit in the case gauge any more.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm wondering if you have the trim die screwed down enough. Since the trim die is also used to resize the brass during the trimming operation, it is critical to turn the trim die down to where it fully resizes the brass. If you haven't seen this before, Dillon has an excellent YouTube video on the use of this trim die which specifies the die be turn down another one eighth of a turn after it contacts the shell plate, or in your case the shell holder. You must set the trim die to fully resize the brass before you set the trim motor onto the die. I'll also add that you will need a good case gauge and calipers to check the case after resizing and trimming. The last step I take when setting my trim/resize process into operation is to "chamber check" the resized and trimmed brass. The processed brass should, at this juncture, drop into your chamber just as easily as a factory round.

Best,

Terry
