.223/5.56 powder

New to reloading .223/5.56 and bought some powder that does not work consistently in the powder measure.  H4198 and Varget both were + or - 3 grains even after many many attempts to get a reliable charge.  Can anyone recommend a powder that works as well as the Winchester 231 that I use for my 9mm ?  When I use a powder like that it never moves a bit.  Appreciate any help.

Hodgdon BLC2, CFE 223, Win 748, AA 2230, all are good choices.

H335 and Ramshot TAC also meter very well.

Also Hodgdon Benchmark.

I have been using Win 748 exclusively for 223/556, 308 and 30/30 reloading. It meters well and accurately. But now I cannot find anyone who has a decent supply for mail order so that my rifle reloading, with my XL-650, has come to a near standstill. I've also tried to find "Hodgdon BLC2, CFE 223, AA 2230" listed below by Dillon with no success. Does anyone have suggestions as to sources for any of these powders?

Powders are in short supply everywhere (except for Black Powder). I check the usual suspects, Gunbot (http://www.gunbot.net/reloading/powder/ ), Armslist and Gun Broker. Sometimes places like Powder Valley and Mid South have powders but they pop up on Gunbot so that's where I look first. I haven't seen powder in a local store since last year. I've managed to get "creative" in my powder selection because my first choice is rarely available (and when it is I buy as much as they will let me). Good luck.

4198 is more of a stick powder and is difficult to meter properly especially for a new reloader. The .223 Rem/ 5.56 NATO was originally designed around a ball type powder such as Win 231. Search around Accurate Arms and you should find a list of their powders and loading charts for the bullet weight you are using.
Start out on the light end and slowly work your way up to the acccuracy and bullet weightvthat works best for you.
I'm reluctant to offer any formulations without having a whole more knowledge of what you are shooting and what you are looking for. Find a good load, practice throwing accurate charges and follow the charts and work your way up.
