.223 powder issues
Quote from Reloader on September 8, 2012, 6:30 pmI am having an issue with the powder station while loading .223. First when the cartridge is going into the powder die it feels like it is getting hung up and makes the powder mechanism seem to "jump". Second, on the way down after filling, a decent amount of powder will drop and go all over the place. Third, the powder bar does not reset all the way back as far as it can. Neither of these problems happen every time and seem to happen randomly. I have cleaned the powder die and powder bar. I am using Dillon dies, the brass has been sized, cleaned, and trimmed. I am using Varget powder. Thank you.

Quote from Reloader on September 10, 2012, 3:00 pmThe issue is most likely the Varget powder, as it is an extruded powder. Be sure you are using the large bar, pull the handle down slowly, so it takes at least one full second to move the powder bar from one side to the other. For the return of the powder bar, tighten the blue wing nut at the bottom of the failsafe rod more. When you push forward on the handle to seat a primer, the coil spring above the blue wing nut should be compressed by 1/3 to 1/2 it's length. This ensures the powder bar is fully retracted.

Quote from Reloader on September 12, 2012, 12:36 amI have never had much luck with extruded powder on any powder thrower. Inconsistent loads and problems like you are describing. I would try some of the ball powders and watch how easy it works and more consistent powder charges. I like ball powders or flattened flake and a lot of companies make it. Hope this helps you.

Quote from Reloader on September 12, 2012, 3:40 pmI like varget in big calibers (.45-70, .444) but really rely on H335 and H414 for bottleneck calibers. Both are very consistant thru the measure and burn well.

Quote from Reloader on June 5, 2013, 5:18 pmI am having the same issue when it comes to the cartridge seemingly hanging up and causing the mechanism to jump, to the point its actually damaged the case. I have the proper travel set, and have no issues with spillage, as the bar travels fully open, to fully closed, my issue is the hanging up causing it to jump. Dillon dies are being used, I have taken apart and cleaned several times, and went through the setup steps as well, only to get the same outcome.

Quote from Reloader on October 7, 2015, 9:37 pmMy fix. Might not be the way intended but it works.
I found that running a spring from where the curved part of the powder rod goes through the two levers on the hopper and secured it to the desk. This pulls the levers down at the same time as the shell plate lowers. No more powder raining all over the place and the loads are now more consistent. The spring only needs to have light tension until the shell place is half way down. I bought a cheap spring at the hardware store. I hope this helps.
