223 Primer Problems
Quote from Reloader on October 26, 2016, 2:17 amLoaded up a thousand 9mm's yesterday with no problems at all.
Today I decided that I'd load up a bunch of 223's so I switched everything on the press from 9mm to 223. Dies are all adjusted like they should be, powder throw is perfect. Loaded the primer feed tube up with small rifle primers and thought I was ready to go.
How wrong I was.
All day long it's been nothing but primer problems. Not feeding, not seating, not seating correctly with some of them crunching as they were being seated. I've had the damn primer system apart 6 times for cleaning and now I'm getting ready to take it apart again cause it's jammed up and won't index.
Everything is adjusted like it should be.
This is getting really old.
I've gotten maybe 50 good usable rounds all day.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Quote from Reloader on October 26, 2016, 11:47 amRelated to the seating/crushing problem. What kind of prep did you do with the brass? Specifically did you swage the primer pocket? If you have range pickup or possible mil surplus they have swaged in primers and you have to take out the swage in order to get the new primer in without problems.
When you switched from 9mm to .223 did you remove the primer system? If not there should not be any problems with the mechanics since they both use the same small primer system. Are the primers dropping in the the primer stack smoothly? When you say the primers are not feeding, can you please explain further?

Quote from Reloader on October 26, 2016, 3:36 pmAll of my 223 brass is once fired Lake city brass that has all been trimmed and swaged.
Did not remove the primer system when I changed from 9mm to 223.
Primers move freely in the filler tube.
The rotary primer disc quits indexing so I take the primer system out, apart then put it back together and it works for a bit then stops again.
The last time it happened last night it jammed and I haven't touched it since.
Worked perfectly while loading the 1000 9mm rounds before this and before that I ran a run of 100 223 working up a load with no problems.

Quote from Reloader on October 26, 2016, 4:31 pmI suggest that you first restore the primer feed to proper function, then test the system by selecting all commercial brass that never was crimped, and see how well it primes.
Did you readjust the primer station locator tab? This tab is attached to the top of the primer feed body, and functions as an adjustable locator button at station 2. This tab needs to be reset when you change to a different diameter case. This tab needs to be set to within .002"-.004" of touching the case. It prevents the case from sliding out of the slot in the shellplate. On the exploded drawing of the 650 primer feed, it is item 9 in the drawing, stock#13820

Quote from Reloader on November 3, 2016, 4:18 pmCalled Dillon yesterday about a problem I'm having with the Chute mount flexing and bending and I told him about the primer problem I was having. He said that even though my brass has all been processed and swaged that the brass in the primer pocket has a bit of memory to it and expands out a bit in time.
Once I get the chute mount problem solved I'm going to try swaging 100 rounds right before I reload them and see how that works out.

Quote from Reloader on December 18, 2016, 4:07 amI am reloading LC brass that I previously swaged, loaded and fired. The primers are getting stuck like the brass was never swaged.
I am going to try reaming out the crimp from now on instead of swaging.
