338 RUM / Edge on 650XL
Quote from Reloader on October 9, 2010, 12:10 amI have a 650XL that I currently load several pistol and rifle calibers. I'm thinking about expanding to either 338 Remington Ultra Mag or 338 Edge (300 RUM necked to 338).
I'm worried about the length on the press as I'm planning on using 300gr SMK bullets. The brass has a case length of 2.850" The 300 SMK is 1.722" long. I'll be loading pretty short to fit in a detachable box mag, so I expect my OAL to be around 3.7"
Will it fit on the 650? Any known issues with big magnums like this on a 650? Thanks.
Danny

Quote from Reloader on October 11, 2010, 2:34 pmThe problem you will encounter is that the completed cartridge will still have the bullet partway up into the seat die when the shellplate begins to rotate. If you have a machinist remove a large chunk from the bottom of the seat die, it should work. Probably need to remove .300-.350" from the bottom of the seating die. You will also need to use the belted magnum powder system, stock#97126 to drop a complete powder charge.

Quote from Reloader on November 17, 2010, 2:24 pmAt that length, it really depends on the profile of the bullet as to when it clears the seating die. With the 250 grain bullets it has enough clearance that no die modification was necessary in .338 RUM. No problems at all with 300 RUM due to the smaller bullet diameter.
