.401 Win Self Loader
Quote from Reloader on June 4, 2008, 2:05 amHi from New Zealand,
I have an odd ball one for the forum. Is it possible to reload 401SL on a 550b?
The rim diameter of the case is close to that of the 7.62x39 at 0.451 v 0.443 inches respectively.
The adaptor plate kit for the 7.62 should function in this instance should it not?has anyone done this before?
can anyone supply projectiles at 200gr more or less and 0.407inch caliber?Cheers

Quote from Reloader on June 5, 2008, 3:21 pmthe rim thickness on a .401 is much thinner than the rim of a 7.62 x 39mm.
It is not likely that this combination will work I'm afraid. I am not aware of anyone offering jacketed projectiles for this cartridge, but it would not be too difficult to get a machinist to make a die to bump 10mm/40 calibre projectiles up to .407", or else a tapered size die to reduce .41 calibre projectiles from .410" to .407".
.401 hasn't been commercially loaded in the U.S. since prior to WW 2, except by some small customer loaders. We're not aware of anyone loading this cartridge on our equipment. Good luck to you.

Quote from Reloader on June 5, 2008, 6:45 pmThanks Dillon, I will forge ahead anyway. CH4D has a sizing die to take the Hornady or Sierra .41 Magnum bullet down to .407 and reloading dies to suit. If I can find a shell plate to suit the cartridge I will be in business!
