44 special seating depth issue
Quote from Reloader on October 17, 2010, 5:55 pmI am changing my SDB over to 44 special.
I can't get enough seating depth to get to the cannelure with trimmed .44 special brass and my Speer bullet. I can barely get to the rear edge. I've tried each of the inserts, and, I have them screwed all of the way in. (These are JHP's.).
Are there any tips or suggestions about how I might do get a little more depth?

Quote from Reloader on October 18, 2010, 1:32 amDid you purchase the 44 Special (20105) set of dies or the 44 Mag (20052) dies. Best to call Dillon when you are in front of the loader.
Please get back to the website with the answer. I will be building 44 special loads for my wife 44. She wants to try her fathers 44 mag with 44 specials for a much lighter kick. No need for her to fall on her ... .

Quote from Reloader on October 18, 2010, 1:49 amI see the part number for both mag and special as 20242. Looking at the individual parts, they are the same, too. I'm hoping my kit is old and there is a newer, longer seating stem.
In addition to specials, you can load up light magnum loads for your wife. I don't like to shoot specials in my magnum because of the crud ring that develops. The "light" loads between the two are different for the different cases, though.

Quote from Reloader on October 18, 2010, 3:46 pmI'll check the bullet number and case size when I get home.
I trim all of my mixed brass once so they are of a constant size. I generally trim to something just over "minimum" and discard anything shorter than that.

Quote from Reloader on October 19, 2010, 4:33 amThe bullet is Speer 4453, 240 gr JHP. Trim to length is 1.156, .001 above minimum 1.155.
I selected my seating stem based on the one that reach the furthest, but, I'm still just at the lower edge of the cannelure.

I figured out a solution that works just fine. I purchased a SDB seating stem for .45. It threads in, and, since the case is much shorter than a .44, gives me plenty of adjustment. I used the SWC one for my hollow points and they seat straight and I can put the crimp right on the cannelure.
