.45 acp crimp die binds
Quote from Reloader on March 31, 2013, 9:08 pmHello everyone,
I just got my 550B a couple of days ago and had a buddy come over and help me setup. I have experienced a problem with the crimp die binding. The bullet will bind when coming out of the crimp die and will have brass shavings on the case. The crimp measurement is .471 ish. Also, I tried backing out the die until it doesn't bind anymore. However, at that point it won't fit into the case gage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quote from Reloader on April 1, 2013, 2:43 amFirst check to be sure that both Tool Head Pins (14008) are properly in place
Next, check to see that the Shellplate (20093) is adjusted to its lowest setting with little to no play and that the Index Ball (13891) and Index Ball Spring (13997) are in place and properly aligned. Remember that to raise the platform, loosen the Brass Tip Set Screw (13923) on the left side of the piston, before adjusting the shell plate bolt (13794), which holds the shell plate assembly in place. Leave the adjustment on the shell plate bolt tight enough so that you can just turn the index sprocket to the next index position. Then remember to tighten the Brass Tip Set Screw before operating the piston.
If those do not help, call customer service, tech support (800) 223-4570.
Good Luck

Quote from Reloader on April 1, 2013, 5:22 pmtry cleaning the die using a bareel brush and ammonia-based solvent, Then visually examine the interior. The crimp dimension sounds good. Is this using new or fired brass? New brass tends to deposit brass flakes up in the die which will cause this.
TIf cleaning does not corect it, contact us for return authorization to exchange the die.

Quote from Reloader on April 2, 2013, 7:59 pmKindly post the final resolution. I am having the exact same issue with new .45 crimp die on my XL 650. I have cleaned the die and the one thing I am seeing is a galled ring inside the die where the carbide is not polished like the rest of the die. I have an email out to Tech Support to see if they have any other recommendations.

Quote from Reloader on April 2, 2013, 10:20 pmHey everyone. Looks like it was the die. My buddy has been reloading for about 4 years and put my crimp die in his machine and it was doing the same thing with the binding. Then he put his die back in and it was fine. He used my brass and bullets to recreate the same scenario on his machine as mine. So, I'll be calling Dillon, hopefully for replacement. It sounds like their customer service is top notch.

Quote from Reloader on May 20, 2013, 5:48 amI too had same problem to the T. Making slow adjustments at a time but it starts binding in die and little brass shavings in die. If you look at the case it is actually shaving off the brass makes it look like its beveled. I have been reloading for a long time and just got back into it buying every thing new again ( what happens when you get divorced), rl550b and every thing to load 9mm and 45 ACP. Have not had any problems with 9mm nor did I have a problem with 45acp in the past. So I called dillon sent back the complete die set and they sent back with new crip and sizing dies. Well just tried these new ones and same problem. Dillon you have a problem with your 45acp dies look around at other post on Internet fourms and you will find same complaints. So I will call again and send back.
