450 compatibility
Quote from Reloader on July 30, 2009, 6:13 pmHi,
I have a Dillon RL450 with several conversion kits and dies with it. I plan to buy another press either RL 550B or RL650. I am wondering if my old conversion kits will work on the RL550 or the RL650?

They might need a different powder funnel, as some handgun calibers required a longer funnel to fully activate the automatic powder measure, but this applies only to conversion kits acquired prior to mid-1985.
the XL650 has a five station shellplate, and therefore is not at all compatible with the RL-450 shellplate.

Thanks for your reply. How can I tell if my kits are from prior to 1985? Is there anything to identify them?

Quote from Reloader on August 25, 2010, 3:29 pmI have two RL450's (and a sq. Deal) that are pre 1985. The powder funnel tubes are only one diameter until it gets to the bottom. At that point it just forms a forcing cone/powder funnel. I converted one machine to the 550, and purchased extra heads and conversion kits. The powder funnel tubes for the newer units have an obvious second diameter shoulder before the forcing cone starts. While I did purchase the auto powder drop for the upgraded machine, I still have one toolhead set up in 9MM with the RL450 powder die and funnel tube and the manual powder drop. The other RL450 is permenantly set up in .357mag, and the Sq Deal is set up in .45 ACP
