45acp hollow point tbl

I have a 650 and have loaded over 3,000 .45acp 230 RN bullets without much trouble at all.  However, when I switched to 185 gn hollow points, I smashed every case I tried.  I am using new brass, but tried fired brass as well, with the same outcome.  Do I need to use anything different for hollow point bullets, as they are more squared off at the base of the bullet?

Hi Rob,

I don't know what you've tried, but my first thought would be for the setting of the powder funnel.  If the base of the new bullets is more square than the old, they will probably be less forgiving of too little flare.  I think the literature says something about flaring .020" over the original outer diameter of the case.

Good luck.

Thanks, I asked around to my reloading friends and they said the same.  Amazing, I just changed the depth of the bell on the powder funnel, and it works smoothly!

650 and 45 acp loader here.

I've loaded 200 plated HP and 230 etc, lead, fmj. Of the 185
so far just plain lead SWC and plated Hollow base berrey's. So a fairly
wide range of crap.

All I can ponder given what you wrote is perhaps you just
need to flare a tad more.
Some bullets want a bit more flare, yeah. It just depends.

On occasion I'll munch a case but that happens on station one with
my situation.

My Dillon 45acp dies date to 1993 and the bullet seater only
came with two contours.  It is a tossup which one works with what
style bullet properly. I just use the one that does not tear up the bullet proper. Most of the time it appears the round nose seater works with most
bullets, and often better with SWC types than the flat one.

Course that doesn't apply to you I just mentioned it as an aside.

Did ya measure those new bullets OD? Maybe they are a thousandths fatter than ya think.

Durp. I failed to  note the replies before hitting the keyboard.
