550 Primer Cup Problem

I changed out my primer slide assembly and installed the one for small pistols to begin loading some .40S&W....When I did the primer cup kept scrubing on the platform, not aligning exactly right. The primer seating punch was also scrubing. I went ahead and loaded 100 -.40's. I thought it would wear and begin to get easier but didn't...

I even had some primers not look good from I think too much punch pressure. Anyways, I found a fix for this. I feel like for new reloaders on Dillon's as myself, this advise may save time and save pulling hair!

To solve the problem, I loosened the two allen screws, primer housing screws, on the bottom of the slide assembly, and run down until the primer cup contacted the platform and protruded through it. I then tightened the primer housing screws and this fixed the problem.

In summary, when you have friction and alignment issues with the primer cup and the platform, loosen the primer housing screws and run platform down on the primer cup to ALIGN and then tighten the two allen screws.

Just started setting up my 550B today and I had the exact same problem!!! My buddy recommended checking the Dillon Forum. Good to know there is someone out there with the same struggles...I was at it for hours. Driving me crazy. Sometimes it just take walking away from the problem and clearing your head.

I took apart the assembly and put the large primer slide back on and noticed it worked just fine. I then reassembled the small primer slide and focused on aligning as best I could and it came out close, but with a tiny scrub.

I tried your method about my second hour of insanity and it didn't work. I'll go and try it again and see if I get a better fit. Cursed with being a perfectionist so I won't stop till I get it just right. The scrubing against the platform was driving me ape ****!

Great Topic GA.

Something else to watch for is if the two primer system mounting bolts are grossly over-tightened, they will bulger on the interior of the housing slightly. If this occurs, use a file to knock the high spots off.

I did not tighten the two allen screws very tight either....You may want to loosen them if this fix I described doesn't fit.  I am a perfectionist also, but again one must be in order to produce good quality reloads that Dillon's are capable of!

So far so good. Today I seated ten primers in a row with no problems whatsoever.

I HAD A SIMILER ISSUE IN REGARDS TO THE PRIMER CUP NOT GOING ALL THE WAY BACK ...AND NOT PICKING UP THE PRIMER ...THE ISSUE WAS SLIGHT BUT IT WOULD CAUSE THE PRIMER TRAY TO COME BACK EMPTY...I TOOK YOUR ADVICE BERNS AND WALKED AWAY ..CAME BACK WITH A PASSION AND TOOK IT ALL APART ...FOUND OUT THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE PRIME ROD THAT MAKES THE PROCESS WORK WHEN PULLING DOWN THE HANDLL, AFTER I RE SET IT AND TIGHTENED THE ROD OVER AND TO THE RIGHT ...PROBLEM FIXED ...IN LESS THAN 15 MIN ...WOULD OF TOOK LESS IF I KNEW WHAT IT WAS TO START WITH ...TRIAL AND ERROR ...ON TO THE NEXT MISSION !
