650 Ram Jam

Hi Guys,

I have been reloading for around 35 years using a single stage press (RCBS) but I am new here and new to the 650, and I am having a big problem.(I am certain it is the operator) I bought a used 650 that was set up for 40 S&W. I started this weekend working up a load that was slightly different from the previous owner, so I checked out the sizing die and no adjustments needed, I added small pistol primers and then adjusted the powder measure to 7 grains of AA #5 pushing a 165 FMJ.I loaded a few and checked the OAL and all was good, so I ended up loading about 60 rounds. I was having intermediate problems with station five ejecting the finished rounds. I have read some post about bending this wire and greasing the shell plate etc., but as several have stated when these rounds hang, powder flies. NOW, this is the problem: all of a sudden the ram likes about 3/8 to 1/2 inch cycling threw. It seems it could be jammed at the primer station  but I can't see any obstruction. Maybe the loose powder is causing a jam. What do you suggest I do. Thanks in advance.

I thought this forum might be helpful, wrong! I figure if I can hypertune a Meade LXD75 10" SN Telescope I can handle this! I disassembled it completly, lubed as recommended, adjusted as recommended, I learned a lot about it, fixed the problem and back reloading.

 Thanks

So was loose powder interfereing with the shellplate action? BTW, we check this forum daily, but for faster assistance suggest phoning us. Mondays are quite busy, so it was only checked in the morning.

Hey! I wasn't blaming anything on you guys, I just thought that others users may try to help out while I know you are busy with the rush of people getting started in reloading and moving up to progessive, like myself.

I guess I got lucky, no detonation! There was a primer that had been flattened sideways and the anvil was seperated and between the primer plate and the platform. I did clean everything and lube as in the manual. I also added a squirt of one shot to the ejector wire and it seemed to be working smoother. It seems to be working fine now, however I only loaded 10 rounds just to check it out. I did see around .003 to .004 of ware under the plate on the platform. I will watch and see how it works out. Thanks

I had a problem like this and finally figured out the shell plate was being hung up by the edge of the cartridge ejector chute which had bent out a little bit and was catching the edge of the shell plate not allowing it to completely raise.  At first I was thinking something terrible had happened, indexing issues, etc. and it was just a very simple mechanical problem.  Boy was I relieved I can tell you.
