9MM Sizing Question
Quote from Reloader on April 25, 2008, 3:47 pmI just added 9MM reloading to my XL650 and have noticed the cases are bulged at the bottom AFTER sizing. The case measurments are in spec, but the case looks like a hot load bulge.
Fired cases do not exhibit this characteristic so I know it is not the load or firearm.
Any feedback opr experience with this issue? I want to make sure I don't have a bad sizing die.

Quote from Reloader on April 25, 2008, 5:49 pmThis is typical with a 9mm case, because it is a tapered case. After seating a bullet, it has an hourglass shape to the loaded round. Purpose for this is to ensure sufficient case neck tension to hold the bullet in place.

Quote from Reloader on December 1, 2008, 12:36 amI just added 9mm to my 650 setup (already have .32/.40/10mm/.44 Spl/.44M Mag/45 ACP/45 Colt/50 AE) and noticed the same issue with case sizing, and its not something I've noticed on other ammo.
It's good to know that its normal, or at least not abnormal.
I'm mostly using brass from a Kahr PM9, but it doesn't help as at this point I don't have any virgin brass for comparison and about 1/4 of my current brass supply are range droppings, which would probably include some Glock-fired ammo (although I didn't see much of the tell-tale breechface on the brass).
It all mic'd out OK, but the bulge was a little worrysome. It seemed to occur with all headstamps and two different seating dies so I assumed it was either normal or a bad die. It seemed to be just barely less pronounced with slightly more case bell, but I guess that was just my imagination (I had presumed that seating was possibly also "crushing" the case, although the seat die shouldn't allow it).
The size die is tight, too, my case mouths with a seated bullet are mic'ing at .377" without any crimp and all the manuals show .380". With this bullet at least I've been crimping to .375" without noticably crushing of the case mouth or squeezing the jackets.
I'll finally get to shoot this ammo tomorrow and see what it does, but its good to know the bulge isn't something to worry about per se.
