Binding

Hi there,

I have a 550B with casefeeder. I primarily load .45ACP and 10mm.

I have been experiencing a binding issue that I just can't figure out. It seems to go away for a while after not using the machine for a while (as in a week or two).

The problem manifests itself on the upstroke of the lever, towards the top of the travel. It *seems* as though there is some binding between the roller follower and the camplate for the automatic shell feeder. The roller follower doesn't track evenly along the length of the camplate. When at the bottom of the camplate, the roller follower is contacting the camplate only on its far outboard edge. However, when you run the ram up, and the roller follower is at the top of the camplate, it is contacting on the far inboard edge of the follower. I have tried adjusting the cam plate, where it attaches to the strongmount bolts, but there is very little adjustment to be had.

If I cycle the machine while watching the roller follower run along the cam, I can see there is some substantial bending stress on the shoulder bolt (it flexes a bit) while I can feel the binding. This is why I think it may be a cam/follower alignment issue. Because the lever has so much mechanical advantage though, it makes it hard to pinpoint the source of the bind.

Again, when I first start to use the machine, it feels great, but after several hundred rounds, I begin to feel the binding. Within 10-20 more cartridges, the binding gets very pronounced, and it feels like I shouldn't do it anymore!

When adjusting the cam, I get the best results when I barely loosen the frame mounting bolts, and use a large flat-blade screwdriver as a lever to minutely adjust the cam towards the roller bolt. Be sure the roller bolt is snug.
