Brass Dust/Filings
Quote from Reloader on July 18, 2011, 3:25 amProblem: Brass "dust" or very small filings in the tray and on my hands when I empty tray. It looks like a small amount of "fools gold" is on my hands when I empty the catch tray.
Background: Loading .40 s&w. Using same load configuration as always (used brass, CCI primer, 4.9 Green Dot, Precision Delta 180gr FMJ RN).
When it started: Immediately after change over from .45ACP. I switched from .45ACP to my .40 s&W set-up. The only change I made on this run is that I am using brass that I ordered online (once fired) - tumbled with corn media and a tablespoon of nu-finish. This is the first time I have used this once-fired, tumbled and finished this way (however, my .45ACP was tumbled and finished without this issue).
One thing I noticed: On station #2 - upstroke, I am hearing/feeling a very small "seizing" sound when the case begins to flare. Very close inspection of station #2 does not reveal any dust. In fact I cannot locate the offending station - weird.
What I have done: Reset the play in the shell-plate. Took some "flare" out the powder funnel. Inspected everything closely - I did try and run through a few of my old brass cases (unclean) on station #2 and I do not hear or feel this light seizing - I think this may have something to do with the brass I ordered.
Sorry for the long ramble - any idea(s) appreciated. I am not too concerened about firing these rounds -should I be?

Quote from Reloader on July 18, 2011, 4:50 pmNo worries about firing these rounds. We usually see this with new brass, less with once-fired. This is a side-effect of resizing the brass until they have been completely smoothed out by the pressures of firing.

Quote from Reloader on July 18, 2011, 5:06 pmThank you! I bet after I fire these - the issue will go away.
PS: I should be a reseller for Dillion. I started reloading about six months ago. At the range, when I pick up brass, I get the "hey you reload" question. I have had three people over showing off my set-up (Basic RL550 .40 & .45 set-ups). Like most gun peole I just like to share. However, selling Dillion is a no-brainer (great product, customer service, price, I mean WTF). Also, the no BS policy works very well for gun types.
Thanks again...
