bullets shoved into case when slide closes
Quote from Reloader on January 11, 2018, 2:33 amHi. I'm loading 185gr semi-wads for a Sig P220 and an 1911. When I drop the slide on both guns on this ammo, the heads get knocked back into the case a little bit. Not completely loose, but enough for me to worry about a compressed load. The only way to prevent it seems to be to crank the station #4 die all the way down, but then i worry about over crimping. I'd love to hear some recommendations other than shooting round nose. The OAL is 1.185-ish. Thanks in advance.

Quote from Reloader on January 21, 2018, 10:24 pmHi,
I tried adjusting the crimp die all the way till it bottoms out and the closest I can get is .472 to .474. Any recommendations would be appreciated. The bullets are lead 185gr. semi-wads.Also, I'm seeing a lot of bulge in the case after crimping. Is that okay?
Thanks

Quote from Reloader on January 22, 2018, 3:17 pmIdeally, you will not want that bulge you are seeing. That is increasing with more crimp. Remember that this is a taper crimp, not a roll crimp. So you are effectively swaging the round down to size with this increased crimping force.
Your lead rounds are probably .452. I just measured a few Starline cases for wall thickness at .010-.0115. So lets use .011. .011x2=.022+.452=.474 and that's with no crimping applied.
A case will have been resized to about .445-.450 inside. So there is some tension. You want to hit that place in crimping where you can see the outline of the bullet, but not really have that wasp-waisted look. Maybe a tiny bit less as long as the bullets are not being shoved back into the case.

Quote from Reloader on January 22, 2018, 11:58 pmHi. Thanks for replying. I cleaned the die out and readjusted. I can now get them to .471, but no smaller. I am still getting a bit of wasping, but, oddly, only on one half of the case. I guess that means the bullets aren't terribly concentric. They are Roger's Better Bullets from Kings.

Somewhere around here the Dillon folks explained this in a recent thread. Your not quite centered. You may need to loosen your dies with a case in each stage and then lock them down to center them. Your manual should describe that procedure.
