Case Feeder and 650 Shells Jamming

I purchased the .223 case feeder for my XL650, both purchased direct from Dillon in the last 30 to 60 days.  Am having problems with shell feed jams on both.

1) The feed plate motor is stalling under light to moderate load.  I have to help it with my hand to keep it going.  Even tried reducing the number of shells in the hopper to just a handful and still having problems.

2) The shells are catching in the feed tube at the cutoff switch causing the feed to stop.  I have to clear about every 5 to 10 shells with a screw driver thru the provided slot (obviously a known problem since you provided the slot).

3) The cutoff switch lever slips to the front missing the shells as they fill the tube resulting in shells backed up into the feeder jamming the shell feed plate.

4) Not sure what to call it but shells are jamming on the machined plate in the XL650 where they are pushed into the shell plate and sometimes I have two shells trying to feed at the same time.

5) Shells are not always engaging properly with the shell plate with one side under and one side on top of the shell plate so that the shell is cocked and the deprimer pin misses the neck opening completely resulting in a crushed shell if I do not catch it.

6) Shells are not engaged at all in the shell plate and end up laying on top of the shell plate.

7)  Shells stick on the slide plate which feeds them into the shell plate either jamming the press action or shooting them across the shell plate and out the other side if the stick and then pop free

One of these problems is happening maybe every 10th shell and it is at the point where I am having to watch the shell feed process way too much and not watching other more critical factors.

And yes, I am cycling the handle completed forward and back until it stops in both directions.

You make a fine press with a great reputation but this is my first experience with your equipment and it has been disappointing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Allen Cain

1) Be sure the disc is almost dragging in the bottom of the bowl. The disc should not allow cases to roll underneath it. If it does, rest the clutch screws.

It also sounds like the clutch screws are too loose. Try tightening them up.

2) Be sure the clear plastic case feed tube is rightside up. The top of the tube has a bevel inside, and the label is at the top. The slot is there to allow you to clear the tube in the event of a jam requiring removal of the tube.

3) The metal arm on the microswitch is easily rebent by hand, so you can line it up to work for various diameters of cases.

4) Be sure you have a #3 station one locator installed. Not sure how you get two shells in the station one locator at the same time. That sounds like the machine is not being fully cycled.

5,6,7) Push down on the edge of the shellplate at station 4. If it feels springy, then the shellplate bolt needs to be tighter. Correctly set, there is no springiness to the shellplate.

Run your case feeder on hi. I had this happen to me. They feed perfect then. Best of Luck to you.

You might also check to be sure that the shell plate and the station 1 locator are in alignment when the case is inserted into the shell plate. My 650 did some of the same things yours is after I changed a broken indexer ring. I tweeked the indexer block (down on the left side of  the main body) and cured it.
