case flareing woes
Quote from Reloader on January 28, 2021, 7:28 pmlong time(1996) sdb owner here.
Dusted off my SD week to change caliber over from 38 super to 40 S&W so that a friend could load some ammo due to the shortage.
Hadnt used the press in 6 mos or more but it was working properly when last used.
gathered the caliber conversion kit.changed out the shell plate with no problems, removed old tool head, etc installed dies in correct stations, and sized and deprimed a case with no problems.
Ran into a problem with adjusting the powder die in order to flare the case mouth. As in no case flaring is occurring with the powder die screwed completely into the tool head.

I did find during my troubleshooting that the white nylon(?) bushing that fits into the powder measure was badly worn and shorter than it should be.AHA ! says I and I scrounged around in my spares and found a new bushing and installed correctly according to my owners manual.
Alas, bushing replacement did not correct the problem at all..no more case flaring then before.
So what gives? I am using the correct powder funnel(W) .The collar and sleeve at the bottom of the powder measure are very worn.I ordered a new powder measure as I only have the original and as a long time USPSA member that measure probably has 250,000 rounds on it.
Can the powder measure attaching mechanism wear enough so that case flaring is not possible?

Quote from Reloader on January 28, 2021, 7:40 pmIf not, what could the culprit be?
I am at a loss , and after waiting for 45 minutes in the tech support que yesterday, I was disconnected with a "having system problems" or some similar twaddle.
I opened a tech support ticket but don't have a lot of confidence that I will be contacted.
Maybe someone here has faced a similar issue?Any help greatly appreciated.I promise to put my curmudgeonly nature on hiatus .You can also contact me directlt at : halseawolf@aol.com

my OCD(self diagnosed) forced me back out to the ammo barn and after a bit of tinkering here is what I found.
Just to see, I removed the powder die clamp from the tool head, and eureka the next case I inserted was correctly flared.I might also note that I had to wiggle the powder measure collar clamp a fair amount and when I tightened down the clamp screw, the powder measure was much more secure on the press.
I was able to adjust the other dies and the powder drop. The press is working but has no clamp on the powder die.

Quote from Reloader on January 29, 2021, 12:37 amone last thing. The powder measure clamp is now resting flat on the top of the depriming/sizing die(that is there is no more downward adjustment available. The powder measure is also pretty rigid and hard to connect the failsafe rod.
If anyone(dillon maybe?) ever reads this it ought to be good for a laugh at least.
The press is working after a fashion.maybe I should stick to 357 magnum or other long case cartridges?
