Cases not lined up in station 1

Page 1 of 2Next

I'm new to reloading and new to my Dillon 650.

I've made about 250-300 .45 ACP rounds so far since getting the new tool head and Dillon dies set up.

When I run the machine I get the cases sticking just off center in the de-prime die on station 1. I have to nudge them a little so they center on the die before I can proceed.

I'm not sure what needs to be adjusted to fix this but it really interrupts the flow of using the machine.

A couple of possibilities to examine,
First, be sure you are pushing the handle fully forward at the end of the upstroke, as this is when cases are pushed the last bit into the shellplate.
This is adjustable, by backing up the camming pin #13371.
Next, check the shellplate bolt tension by pushing down on the edge of the shellplate at station 4. If it feels springy, then the shellplate bolt needs to be tighter.

I'm pretty sure I'm pushing the handle fully forward. I'm putting more than enough pressure to fully seat the primers.

I re-checked the camming pin and it appears to be in the correct configuration per Fig. 188 on page 38 of the manual I'm using.

The shell plate is about as tight as possible. Another quarter turn on the bolt and it binds.

I'll have to practice more at this point. 🙂

If possible, please phone us when you can be in front of the machine for the best possible assistance

I am assuming that you left the dies slightly loose and ran a case up in the dies to center it and with the handle fully extended, tighten the die down. Sometimes, it is the simplest of things.

Hello Tread,

That's the procedure I followed based on the manual. I'm pretty sure that both the toolhead/dies and the shell plate are properly centered.

To me it feels like the case is leaning a bit out of the slot in the shell plate, as if it's not held in firmly. In other words the case is not quite vertical. The plate is, however, properly tightened - it's just a hair looser than binding.

I just switched from doing 9mm to .45ACP and I'm having the same problem. I started watching as I raised the shell platform and it seems like the case is jumping/moving just as the case nears the sizing die. If I slow the raising of the
platform the case seems to stay put. Almost seems like an air displacement issue but don't know.

Just to close the loop on this issue I'm pretty sure I've got this figured out.

The short answer is that the Platform Mount Bolts, 13966, were not secured and that allowed the entire platform to shift as it was being raised.

This instability caused the cases to shift and fall out of alignment.

I purchased this press used and I'm not sure if it wasn't ever properly assembled or if these bolts vibrated loose on transport or in use.

Either way I went through the whole machine from top to bottom and re-secured everything. The only other loose items were the bolts holding the bullet tray, so not so bad. 🙂

But my advice is to re-check everything and make sure it's all properly tightened and lubed.

Mines running like a champ now.

I have had the same issue for awhile but have just been dealing with it.

Very frustrating.

I have actually bent or broken 3 depriming pins on sizing die due to this alignment issue.

Love my press and Dillon has always been very helpful in all troubleshooting in the past but this one seems to be in a Grey area.

When I called they recommended to replace the whole case insert assembly thinking the springs were worn but I bought my press only about 4 months ago from the factory.

Let us know if any new insight comes up.

Page 40 and 41 in the xl650 instruction manual show how to adjust the caming pin. Hope this helps.
