Changing from 9mm to .223/5.56 on the XL650
Quote from Reloader on March 20, 2013, 9:01 pmI've searched around and can't find what I'm looking for, so I thought I would ask you folks...
I recently ordered an XL650 set up for 9mm with the plans to add what I need to convert to .223/5.56 later after I got the machine. But given the long lead times, I'm thinking I might just want to go ahead and make that purchase now.
I don't have anything for reloading rifle rounds...I'm starting fresh...no case gauges, no trimmer, etc. So I'm looking to get everything I need at once, not just the dies, tool head etc...
This is what I have so far...
Dillon Carbide Rifle Dies (Individual & Three-Die Sets)
Stock #: dcrd3dsXL 650 Quick Change
Stock #: 22059Dillon Casefeed Plate Small Rifle
Stock #: 21074Dillon Rifle Case Gages
Stock #: drcgDillon's Rapid Trim 1200B Case Trimmer
Stock #: RT1200I seem to recall it necessary to lube rifle cases...it's been a while since I've loaded rifle rounds.
Am I missing anything?
Thanks.

You'll also want a chamfer tool to bevel the case mouth
& a set of calipers to measure case length
a loading tray will come in handy too

Don't forget the Caliber Conversion Kit: Includes shellplate, locator buttons, powder funnel and casefeed adapter part.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, only I'm looking to load .300BLK.
I placed my order 3-12-13, and am patiently waiting in line.In the mean time, I'm converting every piece of 556 brass I can get my hands on. 🙂

Quote from Reloader on March 25, 2013, 5:10 pmHornady One Shot Case Lube works very well on new/cleaned brass using the XL 650 on handgun brass; should do fine on .223. I use Dillon's case lube when resizing/depriming brass on a Lyman press before going into the walnut media for cleaning/polishing step but prefer One Shot just before going into the case feeder on the 650; it's drier with no residue remaining on the brass.
