cleaning xl650

a friend and I have just came across a used xl650 that has been in storage for probably 10 years or more. a couple of the metal parts are starting to rust, the whole unit is in great shape considering being in storage. we are new to reloading and are curious as to shat would be best to clean it up, and what lube would be best for it. theres sawdust and grit and grime on it. we have numerous dies and other equipment, tumblers and scales, powder measures and some other stuff we don't know what is just yet. we just got it today.
Thanks,
Russ Gordon

The best thing for you guys to do is to get a schematic of the machine ad de-rust the rusted parts to begin with. Then lube all pivoting parts with black moly grease( you can find it at an auto parts store for about $3 for a pound.) This process will at least make your machine worthy of operation. And do

n't forget to lubricate the mainshaft with motor oil!
Overall, do not be frightened, You probably will have to dismantle the machine to an extent, but the trouble is well worth it!

be cautious about aerosol solvents on the plastic parts, as they will dissolve in their presence. I suggest go to the overhead menu, click on "Mauals", select and download the 650 manual. The manual contains exploded drawing to show how the various assemblies go together. We use synthetic wheel bearing grease to lube everything that moves except the shaft- motor oil there please. You will need two small alignment tools to reassemble the machine. Phone or e-mail us with your address information and we can mail those to you.

I'm a fan of Breakfree CLP.  I would first vacuum all the dust and junk off the machine.  Then I would wipe off all the dust and go over all the metal with Breakfree CLP.  Let it sit for several hours to work.  Then wipe it off.  Once clean give it another very light coat of Breakfree CLP.

Let me know how you make out and what you have.

i would just send it in to dillon and have them refurbish the whole thing!
