Crimping problem

I am getting about 1 out of every 10 shells with messed up crimp. Some are a 4 star, some are a 5 star or a totally messed up crimp. They are closed but messed up. All of the rest are the same as factory. Any suggestions?

What Gauge are you loading? Shells should either have a 6 or 8 star crimp, (8 STAR for 12 ga only)

They are 12 gauge Winchester AA's.

Winchester AA hulls have an 8 flute crimp. The start crimp insert installed at the factory is for 8 flutes. Be sure the insert rotates freely. You might need to clean and/or lightly lube the insert so it can freely rotate to line up with the flutes on the fired hull.

I have some used hulls that are a 6 flute. Is there a 6 flute die available?

A six flute start crimp insert was included with the SL900, along with a smooth hemispherical start crimp insert, which is intended for fired hulls only.
