Do I need a powder die?
Quote from Reloader on May 11, 2017, 7:30 pmI’m not new to reloading but I am new to Dillon. I bought a used XL 650 that came with caliber conversion kits for 9mm, 223 and .308. I want to also use the XL 650 to reload for other calibers which means I want to buy extra Toolheads and Powder Measures so I can change over to my other calibers easier. So – my question – when you buy a XL 650 Quick Change, which includes the Toolhead and Powder Measure, does it come with the powder die or do I need to buy a powder die for each Quick Change?

Quote from Reloader on May 12, 2017, 4:43 amQuick Change kits do NOT include the Powder Die. The powder dies come with the caliber conversion kits. After you have several caliber conversion kits you find that many parts for a new caliber are already purchased and you only need a few parts purchased. Page 45/46 of the owner manual has caliber conversion charts (IE: parts needed for each caliber to load). The owners manual is available online to download. Having a downloaded copy makes it fast for lookups, etc.
Congratulations on your used loader. Load Safe, /L

Quote from Reloader on May 12, 2017, 10:20 amI think it is a misprint on the web page for the quick change kit. The 550 quick change lists that it comes with a powder die. On the 650 caliber conversion page it says the quick change kit #22059 comes with powder measure.
The caliber conversion kit has the powder funnel but not the powder die.

Quote from Reloader on May 12, 2017, 6:44 pmIf you looking at the XL 650 Quick Change kit #22059 yes it comes with the powder die #20064 (page 54). What it does not come with is the caliber specific powder funnel which should be in the caliber conversion kit.

Quote from Reloader on May 13, 2017, 12:59 amI was wondering about that -- because of what I found on the Dillon web site – on the “XL 650” page, under “THE BASICS”/”If you want to leave your dies preset, you'll need” it says: “The 650 Quick Change(#22059), which includes a powder measure, powder die, toolhead and a toolhead stand.”
I will also buy the quick change kit for each caliber I want to load -- so should get the ‘caliber specific powder funnel’ I’ll need for those calibers.
In any event -- I’ve decided that even if the quick change did’t come with the powder die (and I don’t know why it wouldn’t) – I would just order it separately.
Thanks for the answers. I’m certainly looking forward to being able to say “I’m a Dillon man”!
