Every other primer

Brand new 550b, new to reloading, getting every other primer using the large and small set-up. Contacted Tech Support and adjusted bar. Still no luck. In reading these forums there appears to be many issues with the primer system. Using Winchester primers - large and small pistol.

Ok--I don't want to sound mean since you're a new reloader, but trust me, it's not the 550B machine and the primer system will work great once the 'operator' gets it all installed & adjusted correctly-- This is one fine reloading machine and all you need is to do is take your time to get it set up; then WATCH the moving parts as you cycle the operating handle... Have your instruction manual next to you for reference-
Let's begin by removing the primer feed tube and have you examine the plastic tip that goes into the machine first-notice it has a straight raised area on it & that must go into the machined 'groove' down inside the primer shield tube so it is in the correct position(rotate the primer tube until it seats properly); Since Dillon Tech svcs walked you thru the primer pick-up adjustment, let's presume it is adjusted ok, at least for now-; Next slowly move the operating handle down (1/2 of a cycle) and ->WATCH the primer slide go back to 'pick-up' a primer- the operating rod should move freely & not get hung-up on the operating rod bracket;next look at the primer seating cup to make sure it is all the way in to pick-up a new primer(if not, then you have to adjust the slide set screw + maybe primer seating cup?) next look at the primer feed "stop spring" to see if it is opening(you may have the stop spring "screw" in too tight?(loosen it 1/4 turn or so)[because under this piece of 'spring steel' is the 'magic' button, called the PRIMER FEED STOP PIN-- which protrudes into the slit of the plastic tip of the primer feed tube and controls the 'release' of each primer] Now, once all of this is adjusted correctly--(you''ll have to move handle back up to make adjustments, then back down to check them again*). Now, move the handle back up to the starting position, slowly- and WATCH the movement of all of the parts mentioned above-- make any adjustments if needed-- then try a few more full
cycles and watch for all of the parts to move in sync-- (I presume you have the primer slide return spring installed?) All this said, you should be able to do the
checking & adjusting and get that new 550 B going soon ! Remember reloading is a 'precise' hobby and this machine will deliver a 'precise' end product once you take the time to get it ALL set up correctly-- Your next important project is the
'powder dispensing system'-- take time & watch how it works also. Hope this information helps you-- if not you at least you know how it should work & can call Dillon Tech svcs again-- You made a wise decision with the Dillon 550B !!
Oh, I almost forgot-- are you using the 'primer follower rod' in the feed tube?
Good Luck & I'll watch to see if these steps don't help to fix your problem.

Thank you for your response. Apologize if I seemed to criticize Dillon in any way. Obviously it's my not knowing or doing something right. I've invested in $2000+ worth of Dillon equipment so I'm a believer.

Apology not necessary & I don't work for Dillon, but I know they are extremely busy
and your issue can be extremely frustrating, especially when you've 'invested' that amount of money & your eager to get going. I thought that I'd just check in and see if you were able to solve the primer pick-up problem ? And if you were up & running ?
If you are not, then sing out on the forum; You might get help here sooner than calling Dillon & they're saying e-mails are also backed up a week or so. Your call.

Primer issue solved! I printed out your reply and took it to my reload station. Followed your instructions and all is well. Well, everything except loading 40 cal but thats for another post.

Nice job ! I knew you could do it ! Sometimes it just takes a little time & understanding of the process & mechanics of what you are trying to solve..and now
you and I both have confidence in your abilities to continue doing so... and the 40cal
issue ... that should be easier ?? Just think about the mechanics of the powder & case
belling station; then the mechanics of the bullet seating and 'taper-crimp' ! The belling & the taper crimp ?? Does the case length matter for both of these processes?
(You mentioned 'multiple/mixed case manufacturers-- maybe ck different brands for OAL case length & then sort-adjust-load each manuf. brass all at same time. Also good idea proposed by Dillon to ck sized/deprimed cases in sizing gauge & if they fit OK, then try them in pistol chamber before reloading them & if both of these check out ok, then you know it's probably case length/adjustment related.
