Federal Brass primer
Quote from Reloader on August 18, 2020, 7:09 pmI have just started reloading 45 ACP. As I have purchased different brands of ammo I was under the impression that the primers were a standard for the same caliber brass. What I found out was that Federal and several other manufacturers have a smaller primer and the Large Pistol primers won't fit into them. Are there no standards on the shell primers?

Quote from Reloader on August 18, 2020, 9:23 pmIt used to be that primer size was specific to caliber, but a while back they started to sell Non-toxic ammo which had no lead or heavy metals in the primer compound. Unfortunately they didn't make them in anything but small primers. So, to sell non-toxic .45 rounds they had to use small primers instead of the large. When I inspect my brass prior to reloading I look at the primers and separate the small from the large. I usually don't see to many of the small primers so I just toss them in my scrap brass for recycling. If you have a lot of them I would sort them and when you have enough, make a run of small primer brass loads.
