G powder funnel too tight in .45 Colt brass
Quote from Reloader on November 26, 2010, 12:37 amI clean my cases before they go into the SDB.
With brass at the second station, when I lift the handle up I get a very jerky movement until the funnel clears the case. This causes me to get a number of flipped primers.
It seems as though the funnel is either too long or too tight (or both). Since the G funnel is also used in the .45 ACP I tend to think it might be too long and hanging up when the shell plate tries to rotate. If it were shorter it would be clear of the case sooner--the case wouldn't have rotated as much before it was out of the case.
I've cleaned and polished the funnel with no change. Did a complete tear-down, clean, lube and reassemble with no change.
Finally ordered the .44 mag funnel and it seems to have solved the problem.
Did I miss something?

Quote from Reloader on November 26, 2010, 3:44 pmI assume you meant the 'E' funnel for 45 caliber. New brass, or brass that has been overly cleaned will tend to stick on the end of the powder funnel. Use steel wool or a scotchbrite pad to periodically wipe off the end of the funnel to prevent brass buildup on the end. Brass only needs to be tumbled about 1 1/2 haours or so when cleaning. The carbon on the interior of the case acts as a lubricant on the funnel surface. Funnel length has absolutely no effect.
