Headspace guage
Quote from Reloader on March 18, 2008, 3:26 amI have a DPMS LR308B with a very tight chamber. I'm going to buy the Dillon 3 die set to reload for it and it's been suggested that I also use a headspace gauge, Pt. # 12867.
I've been reloading for a while, mostly for bolt guns, and revolvers. I don't really understand the use of this gauge.
The problem I have with the DPMS is, it fails to fully chamber a round quite often. The bolt closes but not all the way, and cannot be opened by pulling the charging handle back. This mainly happens with lower quality ammo. And of course, the DPMS has no forward assist.
How does the gauge help?
Thanks.

Quote from Reloader on March 18, 2008, 2:53 pmthe reason most reloaded bottleneck rifle rounds fail to chamber is because the size die is not pushing the shoulder down sufficiently. Think of the gage as a chamber with a step cut at each end. The step at the case head end hasthe lower step cut to minumum headspace, the top step at maximum headspace. You adjust the size die so that a sized case drops in flush with the lower step for semi-automatic rifles.
You can download the instructions by clicking on "manuals" on the overhead menu, and opening up the accessory manual.
