Index rings
Quote from Reloader on March 1, 2018, 5:45 amGuys i sent my press in about 5 or 6 months ago for the cleaning and such. Dillon did a great job and did not charge for the service..Thank you Dillon
Ok since then i have broke about 5 indexing rings. The press is not hanging up nor am i forcing the ram.
At one point i had to push the index ring back after the press was raised up tool head. Because it was not going back by the spring.
I have installed new spring and that did not help.I called Dillon and told them about a wear mark on the bottom of the platform from the indexing ring.
The tech said to just file or sand just 2 thous. Of an inch to smooth it out.
So i did that.. cleaned the ram top.. put a small amount of Lucas red "N" tacky #2 in the groove on the ram were the index ring goes a little on the bottom of platform where the ring was hitting the platform. And a small amount on the ring itselfPut it all back together. Ran the ram up and down a few times. Ring was indexing as it should.
I start decapping .223 brass using a universal decapping die.About 10 cases in just soft tink...the indexer broke ... again
I am trying to figure this out. I hate calling Dillon asking for more indexing rings. They must think i eat them for lunch.
Any suggestions would sure be appreciated

Quote from Reloader on March 1, 2018, 4:46 pmHow tight does it fit? I am curious about anything that could be a future problem. Never broke one myself. I reached over and when it's against the indexer, it's firm. I run the shaft up where I can see the ring good. Grab it and it's just sitting loose in the place for it. I mean, it's under spring tension, but it's minor. I can manually turn it no problem. Never seems to be pinched.

Quote from Reloader on March 1, 2018, 10:14 pmThe ring fits well ..turns freely as does the shell plate.
I think i have found the problem.. there is a burr on the ram where the ring sits at the 12 o'oclock position...( looking at the press from frt to back. 12 o clock being the back).
No.to.figure out how to remove this burr

Quote from Reloader on March 1, 2018, 11:37 pmOk this is what i dis and hopefully rectify this problem.
The day before i JB welded the index ring back together and let it sit over night to fully set up.
The burr i found on the ram i used some very very fine files i had to take the edge off the burr and then used 2000 grit emery paper to polish the ram where the burr was at.
Today i took an exacto knife to take all the excess JB weld off the index ring then use 600 grit and 2000 grit paper to smooth out the rough spots on the index ring.
Installed the index ring on ram ... to check to make sure it moved freely in the groove on the ram.
Then greased the groove on the ram and the index ring and put everything back together.
Press seems to be working as it should.
Will finish decapping 5.56 cases and see if that was the problem and hope the index ring dont break
