indexing spring

I have a new to me XL650. It's all set up and seems to work fine. The only issue is the indexing spring. I can see the ends are starting to pull apart. Do I wait until it just breaks or replace it now? What is the correct procedure. I have hunted around and have not found a step by step procedure. Thanks

If you are referring to the Indexer Return Spring (PN 13791 - page 54 in the latest manual) then some pulling at both ends is 'normal'. Some springs last for years, some stretch earlier. As long as the Ring Indexer is returning smoothly then no need to replace the spring. Check for any binding by moving the handle 1/3 and hand rotating the ring indexer. Remember to keep grease on the indexer block as this smooths up the rotation of the Ring Indexer a huge amount. Grit on top of and under the Ring Indexer will lead to sticking rotation. If this happens then the platform has to be removed, all parts cleaned. Call and get the re-alignment tool for resetting platform. After a few platform removeal/installs, the re-alignment took is often no-longer needed.

This spring is one of the ones in the 'Spare Parts Kit N01-21146'. The kit is well worth the price. When you dip into the kit for a part you get to keep loading and order a replacement.

To be on the safe side, because the spring looks damaged, order a replacement.

Install is fairly easy. Hold (or have someone hold) the handle 1/3 up. Dental pick or small needle nose pliers to remove spring from the back side. Then slide off the front of the Ring Indexer. Install in reverse order. First put on Ring Indexer, rotate around mainshaft, grab end of spring with dental tool and pull to just over the pin. Verify spring is in the mainshaft groove, lower handle.
