neck too loose 223

Page 1 of 6Next

Brand new 1050 223 carbide dies. Aside from not picking up a primer too often I have a bigger problem. When seating, place bullet on top of case, ram down and back up, bullets fall into case. Necks are too big. Two bullet brands.....same thing...Winchester 55gr PSP with cannelure and FMP 55gr without.

I need this working....have customer orders to fulfill. Is it the die not sizing correctly or inner bulb on decapper too large????? What should I try first?

Remove the decap assembly, be sure the size die contacts the top of the shellplate. Size a case, see if the bullet falls into the case or not. Next, if that is fine, measure the carbide expander ball diameter, also check the upper bolt where the seat stem screws into it.

Also sounds like you might have the die itself adjusted to low, I used a clean factory case (from dillon) or any case that you know is exact to get the proper adjustment. Take the lock ring loose from the powder die, make sure the powder tube is empty. also loosen the bracket on the powder drop to allow the die to spin free while adjustments are made. Run the machine all the way down with the shell in the powder station, now back the die out until the powder bar goes back all the way. then adjust it 1/2 turns down only until the powder bar fully opens, make sure the powder bar fully activates by looking into the powder tube while cycling the machine with a shell in the powder station. Once you get it adjusted where it fully opens, Lift the handle slightly and adjust the die a 1/4 turn more down, use proper wrench size to hold the die exactly in place while you snug the lock ring. Now you are only expanding the neck of the case to the bare minimum. That will make the bullets sit perfectly on the top of the shell keeping it in place until the press makes its way to the seating die. Hope this helps

after just sizing the necks are about .210.....expander ball makes them approx .220, but the bullet can't be pushed in by hand so the end of the neck seems Ok. It's just after the bullet is pressed in and starts rotating to the crimp stage it falls into to case as if the neck is not straight and smaller at the mouth than down farther.

This is really frustrating as I have more ammo to take apart than finished at this point. To top it all off the decapper pin bent around like a pigs tail this morning and broke off when I tried to straighten it. I pulled another one from another set of dies for now....also .220 ball.

What should the expander ball size be? Should I grind it to say .210 - .215? I tried pressing a bullet in at .210 and it seemed fine
