Newbie Primer Jam

Hello, excited to (finally) enter the world or reloading. I'm about 600 rounds in with my new 650 reloading 9mm.

The last few that I pressed did not have primers. The follower on the low primer indicator was low but not enough to sound the alarm. I pushed on the follower very lightly and it fed a few more into the rotary primer disc. They all came out right side up. I did this until the follower was as low as it would go but still seemed too high to be empty. I pulled the follower out and removed the low primer indicator. Took the shield cap off and removed the magazine. Sounded like a few primers may have dropped into the magazine shield in the process. The magazine was empty. Charged the handle about a dozen times - no new primers showed up in the disc. Tried to put the magazine back and it won't go all the way down. Maybe 3/4 inch too high and am not able to put the Magazine Shield cap back on. My next thought was to remove the tool head, unbolt the press and turn it upside down - hopefully to remove the primers that I assume are preventing the magazine from seating all the way. Before I do this, I figured I would post my issue on the forum and get some advice from folks that actually have experience.

Not sure if this is related but, I did experience some "rough" pressing at times. Mostly when pulling down but, sometimes pushing back up. This only happened about 10% of the time. Most times it was very mild. A few times it was pretty rough and once it almost totally locked up. Seems to come and go. Not sure if this is related but, figured I would mention it.

Will call Dillon if I can resolve here. Thanks for any info in the meantime.

It is very likely that when you removed the magazine tube from the shield, all the remaining primers fell out. They are now blocking you from reinserting the magazine tube. You need to first remove the shellplate, then unbolt the primer feed from the platform, turn it over, and pour the primers out.
To remove the shellplate, first loosen the set screw located on the left side of the shaft, about one inch from the top of the shaft. Loosen it about one turn. Now, detach the ejector wire from around the head of the shellplate bolt, and unscrew the shellplate bolt. Removal of the shellplate bolt allows you to lift off the shellplate. With the shellplate off, remove the two large bolts that secure the primer feed body to the platform.
Assemble in the reverse. When you install the shellplate bolt, turn in down until it stops, then back it up about 1/8 turn. Snug the set screw on the left side of the shaft, but do not overtighten. Then press the ejector wire back into position.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will attempt tonight and report back. Thanks again.

A little aggravated... I did as instructed and sure enough about 5 primers came out. But the process was tricky - again I'm new at this. Most of it due to the tiny springs that ended up on my floor for about a half hour. Also broke the ring indexer in the process. Still don't know if it worked or not. I could have just dumped the whole press upside down and accomplished the same thing. Ugh!
