Older 650 w/ New Powder Measure

Not sure what I did but the texte didn't publish...sorry here it is..I hope.:

My 650 & 4 conversions are 15-20 years old. Ordered new conversion & powder measure & noticed a change in the Fail-safe rod on the measure. Read about and know they'll send me a new rod but until it gets here I'm going to relieve the spring on the bell-crank and use the old-fashioned spring on the powder bar. What do you all think about that? any major problems I might run into. I do run the powder check on my conversions so double charging is unlikely. Thanks. Robert

My xl 650 is 1993 vintage.
Recently got a couple new powder measures, and yep, they are different alright than the old one was (is).

Sure, you can use the spring as was on the old one. I use a rubber
band on mine though (the new ones and not always). Still
experimenting if it matters with one or not (the rubber band). So far
it seems to me my measure drops the same with or without the band to provide return tension.

I too had a issue with the saftey rod being different.

In my case I decided to just go by pictures and made one using
my old one as a guide for bends.

I used 3/15 all thread from local hardware store.  A propane torch
and a good vice were used too. I think I might have used a vice grip too, but that is optional. Just heat thread all to near cherry red and apply
proper bends and tweak until it sort of looks like original except with
the extra length and the cute bend on the end to fit in the new powder
measure style levers.

I then used some shrink tubing I had laying around to cover up the threaded bits after taking the new crafted rod to a bench grinder
to gently grind down a bit on the threads along the length (except as
needed on the end the plastic nut goes)

Works great so far. After the current stupid panic of 2013 I may
ask Dillon to send me a factory made one.
