Persistent problems with primer system
Quote from Reloader on November 14, 2016, 6:20 pmI've had my SDB for about two months now and really do like it. But I must say that the automatic primer system leaves much to be desired. I have yet to have a loading session during which I didn't have to stop and remove the primer system at least once because of some sort of problem.
Today, I loaded the tube with 100 small pistol primers and here is a recap of my experience:
Removed the system to clear up jammed primers, three times.
Three (3) rounds with the primer seated sideways.
One (1) round with the primer seated upside down.I know I'm using the correct tube (Blue tip) and I know I'm using the correct pickup tube (Yellow tip)
I'm picking up ALL the primers with the shiny side up and pouring them into the orifice. Things seem to go downhill from there.
Any advice?
Thanks

Quote from Reloader on November 15, 2016, 4:03 pmThe first thing I would check is to make sure that the aluminum tubes are correct, not just the tips. The I.D. on a large tube is about .210", while the I.D. on a small tube is about .180"
Next, try a different brand of primers. The concentricity of primers has been intermittent for a while. We have measured some primers that were .0015" out of round. Therefore they twirl as they drop down the tube.
Beyond these, I recommend you phone us when you are in front of the machine so we can walk through the various adjustments on the primer feed. You can start by removing the primer feed from the frame, and cycling it by hand. Does it drop a primer correctly each time?

Quote from Reloader on November 15, 2016, 4:33 pmI'm using CCI primers, which I purchsed in the Dillon store. I guess I should have mentioned that.

Quote from Reloader on November 16, 2016, 5:05 amWell, I took your advice and called tech support. I was told to bring the press in for service and not given much in the way of support. I could have figured out to bring the press in without wasting my time calling support. What a disappointment your telephone support is.

You are welcome to call and ask for the sales manager, Gary Kieft, for assistance. Extension 5124.

Quote from Reloader on November 16, 2016, 7:14 pmYes, I was in front of the machine when I called. He laughed when I mentioned about the tube size and that the primers may be faulty.

Quote from Reloader on November 17, 2016, 4:38 pmI have the same problem. I have sent machine back for service but the problem persists.
I am considering installing the brass tipped feeder tube from the 650.Can anyone tell why I should not use the brass tipped feeder tube from the 650?

Quote from Reloader on November 19, 2016, 2:19 pmI too own a SDB machine and love it. Sorry you have had problems with primer feeding. No company can boast of 100% customer satisfaction however, Dillon Precision is by far, THE BEST company with which I have ever done business. THEY WILL EVENTUALLY SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM IF YOU STICK WITH THEM!
I've been down the 'discouraging road' and it's not really fair to knock the manufacturer until or unless ALL alternate 'roads' have been explored.
I have two suggestions (if you haven't already tried them) Pam. Is it possible that the aluminum filler tube is not completely straight? And, I assume you are using the Primer Follower Rod?
Again, STICK WITH DILLON. THEY WILL GO THE EXTRA MILE TO MAKE IT RIGHT!

Quote from Reloader on November 21, 2016, 2:34 pmI may have found the problem..... maybe.
When pull the cotter pin out of the pickup tube, I noticed that the primers tend to jam up in the plastic tip, and I have to flick it with my finger to get the primers to drop into the feeder tube. My guess is, as a result of the "jam up", the primers may be going into the tube helter-skelter.... some upside-down, some sideways.
My press came with some extra pickup tube tips, so I measured the inside diameter of each, and found that the clear tip (the one with the holes) that was on the end of my SMALL
