powder at station #2

As i was reading and learnng too operate my new reloader

what keeps the powder and primer from dispensing at station #2 if there is no shell at that station?

If i load a shell at #1 and deprime it, wont the powder and primer be dispesned at station 2, or am i over reading this

thanks

Robert

The powder only drops when a shell is in Station 2.  The shell pushes up on the powder/expander funnel in the powder measure which causes the powder measure to rise.  This rising is what causes the powder measure to activate and drop powder.

Try it without powder and you will see how it goes up with a shell at Station 2.

The primer cup will always have a primer in it--BUT if the primer doesn't go into a shell (no shell, again at station 2) when the press is cycled no additional primer is placed in the primer cup--the cup has to be empty before another one will be dropped into the cup.  This is hard to see as all the magic takes place inside the primer assembly--but the short version is the column of primers is held in place with a pin that is moved out of the way when the primer slide assembly moves back (toward the operator--that's you).  If there is no primer in the cup a primer drops down into the cup, if there is one in the cup already then no primer will drop--the tolerances are such that the primers can't 'double feed' into the primer cup, the primer either drops or stays in the column.

hope this helps.

Walt

thanks

i saw the magic we just ran 6 through to use as test subjects at teh range , if they go good we will run 100 tomorrow,

i did manage to break teh bolt on the primer measure, i thought cw would reduce powder charge and accidently overtightened it

so luckily  the large bar screw fit so we are up and running, will have to ordera new bolt

i wish the book had said ccw rotation would decrease powder weight, vice the turn the nut to regulate the amount of powder, i filled one brass over the top and made a huge mess

but now i think i have it down

Here is a helpful trick so we don't forget in the future:

I placed a sticker on my powder bar indicating what direction to turn the bolt to increase powder (clockwise.)

I also placed a sticker on station 2 to indicate what direction to turn the die to increase flare (clockwise.)

Hope this helps somebody or maybe something simple for Dillon to add at the factory.  I'm sure they get a lot of calls about this.

yep i did to i got a sharpie and marked the bar so i wont forget.

If you don't push the handle all the way up it won't seat the primer and if you don't pull it all the way down it won't load the powder. You can advance the casing by only slightly pulling the lever.
