Powder drop variance
Quote from Reloader on April 7, 2018, 8:33 pmI’m reloading .270 on my 550press to 53gr of IMR 4831(extruded) and my 10 drops are as follows:
52.94 (-.06)
53.22 (+.22)
52.92 (-.08)
53.54 (+.54)
52.54 (-.46)
52.66 (-.34)
53.06 (+.06)
52.96 (-.04)
52.28 (-.72)
52.64 (-.36)The target charge is 53gr.
Are these good numbers or do they need improvement? Is this the consistency i should expect with extruded powders in a 550? Thank you all for the help and advice.

Quote from Reloader on April 9, 2018, 8:13 pmI would expect it to be slightly better, usually within +/- .3 grain. Be sure to start with the hopper at least 2/3 full, through 10-15 charges and dump them back before you begin weighing, and make sure the powder bar is travelling fully in both directions.

Quote from Reloader on April 10, 2018, 2:51 pmI have the hopper filled within about 3/4” from the top, antistatic in the hopper, copper ground wire attached as well, and I am using a magnum powder bar adjusted to full travel. The only thing i can think of is that i need to anchor my bench. I get some jarring movement of the bench when i work the press. Do you think the jarring could be making inconsistent powder density in the hopper?

Quote from Reloader on April 10, 2018, 4:40 pmIt is very possible that the bench movement is contributing to the powder variation. You might also try using the standard large powder bar instead, it should dispense this amount of powder.
