POWDER MEASURE ACCURANCY

Page 1 of 2Next

I would really appreciate if you could clarify me some items regarding the above mentioned subject, since I have spent almost all week-end, making more taking more than 200 measures on the scale, without any clear outcome (more than +-0.3 grains variations over a 5.2 grains reference measure):

1.- I've observed that, without adjusting anything, charges tend to be heavier when the powder compartment is almost full, even having in place the 16306 low powder sensor. Is this correct? How can it be improved?

2.- I was also thinking about using the 650 for training rounds, and using external weighed powder for contest rounds. I have also seen in some other reply, that for this purpose you suggest the 16629 powder die and the 16617 powder funnel. But, what I don't see is, A) how could the entire original 650 powder system be removed and replaced by the 16629 without the need of new size adjustments which will modify the already existing ones?, and B) will station 2 still open the brass as the 650 usually does when operating with its original die?

3.- Finally, I need some clues to replace the rheostat control unit of the RF 100, which I have already received (I don't want to break it!)

Thanks a lot

What caliber are you loading? If a handgun caliber, be sure you are flaring case mouths at least .010" to ensure full powder bar activation. Throw about 10 charges and dump them back before you begin weighing.

The 16629 powder die has a set screw in the side to lock the expander funnel in place.

With the rheostat, did you receive instructions? You use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the existing switch housing away, unplug the wires, and plug the new assembly in place as per the instructions. Then the new housing snaps into place.

Thank you for your answer.

I use to reload 9mm, .40sw and .45 acp, and I've checked with the scale about 250 charges. I have variations, over a 5.2 grains target for the .40sw of about +-0.3 grains, depending very much on the level of the powder bottle.

Regarding the 16629, and if I understood you well, this powder die should be then be adjusted as the original one? Could not then be replaced at will by the original one, depending on the precision we need (training or competition)?

Finally, I have not received any instructions on the replacement of the RF 100's control unit. Could you send me one or can I download it?

Thanks again

Just as a clarification:

1.- I have registred variations of about 0.3 grains around a target weigh of 5.2 grains.

2.- I was looking for something that could almost instantly replace the regular powder die, without the need of making any readjustements, that could allow me to charge specific rounds with previously outweighed powder (comtetition, for instance, vs training). Could 16629 play that role?

3.- Do you have any instructions or drawings that could be followed to replace the control unit of the RF 100?

Thank you once more

What powder are you using?

16629 has a set screw to secure the expander funnel in place.Thread it down until the case is flared about .010", and snug the die lock ring in place.

Please send us an email, and we can scan and email the instructions to you.

Thank you.

The powder I'm using is Óptima A (Spanish) and BA9 (French).

Following your explanations about the 16629, looks like it requires a permanent assembly as the standard powder die. If this is the case, I'm afraid it couldn't be easily replaced by the standard one when I may need to reload a higher number of rounds for training purposes, or viceversa. Am I correct? Maybe it could be easier, just for outweighed loads, to replace the regular powder bottle by an empty one, what do you think?

I have already written Steve asking for the manual, but haven't had any reply yet.

Thank you

you would indeed have to unthread the powder die from the toolhead and exchange it. Steve has been in Europe for the IWA show. He will be back in the shop tomorrow.

I've been following the instructions in order to upgrade the control unit of the RF100, but unfortunately I haven't been able to unplug the wires connections, since are very different from European ones and I'm afraid of breaking the wires. Could you tell me where to press or pull to unplug them?

THank you

THe wires have slotted receptibles crimped to the ends, most likely covered in red plastic. grab the red plastic part that the at the top, round in shape, with pliers, and gently tug. The wire with the red piece crimped to it will lift off with a small amount of effort.
