Powder Measure Failsafe Kit For Rl550

What exactly does this add to an older press? How does it work. Is there a manual for it I could download? TY.

If your machine does not have the failsafe return linkage on the powder measure, and relies solely on springs to retract the powder bar, it is possible for the powder bar to gum up enough eventually to a point where the springs are unable to retract the powder bar. If you fail to notice this, you can load ammunition without powder in it.
The failsafe system was introduced in 1992. In 2000 it was redesigned to eliminate the use of return springs. Now the rod retracts the bar after it pulls the locking linakage down and out of the way. This second lock-link, as we call it, delays movement of the powder bar until the end of the upstroke of the handle. On auto-indexing machines, including the Square Deal B and xl650, this means the shellplate has already rotated to the next position before the powder bar has another powder charge in it, greatly reducing any chance of a second powder charge into a case.
On a manually-index machine, such as the RL550, this provides no additional safety feature, as unless you rotate the shellplate, you can dump multiple powder charges with every cycle of the handle.
There is no separate manual for the failsafe kit, but this is covered in the RL550B machine manual, available at the bottom of the home page under the heading "Resources"
