POWDER MESURE
Quote from Reloader on February 14, 2010, 7:06 pmnew bee here and need some help
I recently started to work on the 550b and am currently stuck on and issue I'm having with the powder measure
after reading ton's of books I have been traumatized on how much powder is needed for each type of bullet and want to clear some thing up
as of now I am currently running the .223 set up with a 50 gr projectile, the amount of charge recommended is 23.0 grams after 30 min of adjusting I hit the 23.0 grm mark but as I continue to load more rounds the powder drop will fluctuate but only by tenths of a gram ...example instead of getting 23.0 grams I will get 23.4,23.3,23.6,23.1, ETC. will this cause a big problem in the long run or am I just being over reactive ?

Quote from Reloader on February 14, 2010, 11:55 pmIn the instruction manual about powder bars, a small powder bar is used for up to 20.0grs., and the large powder bar from 20grs.- 50grs.
I bought me a second powder measure just for this, one for pistol, one for rifle...You can always change out the powder bar instead of having two measures. You may be using the wrong type of powder, I mean an extruded one versus a ball or flake.....Extruded will not flow as good.

Quote from Reloader on February 15, 2010, 7:03 pmI know IE Trooper. We bought our 550B at the Costa Mesa GUN SHOW the same day. He and I are both using Hodgdon H322. I have yet to start on my powder measure. How accurate is the Powder Measure? Are the ranges IETrooper is experiencing normal/safe? Like I stated in previous thread I'm a perfectionist. I just would like the peace of mind before I start pulling my hair out.

Quote from Reloader on February 16, 2010, 3:17 pmMy machine is fairly new, and it throws my .40S&W loads within +/_ .1grs.
That is what Dillon's measures are known for, accurate powder charges...

Quote from Reloader on February 16, 2010, 3:44 pmH-322 powder, because of its shape, will throw powder charges within +/- .1-.2 grain. If you are trying to dispense 23 grains of powder, acceptable variation overall will be 22.8 to 23.2 grains. H-322 is an extruded powder, the granules looking like little pieces of mechanical pencil lead. Be sure it take at least one full second to move the powder bar all the way over, and be sure the powder bar completes full travel at the same time the handle bottoms out. Start with the powder hopper at least 3/4 full, throw 10-15 charges and merely dump them back before you begin weighing the charges. This allows the powder to settle in underneath the baffle.

Quote from Reloader on February 17, 2010, 1:31 pmNot trying to be smart, but you need to do some reading up on powder types and varieties. There are at least a half dozen that will work loading .223's. I like BL-C(2) as it is a very small ball type, flows well....Look at any reloading manual, and you will get fairly good info...Accurate 2520 is another.
