Powder Splash

New 650 is running great. I am getting a little powder splash when it indexes. Would you recommend cutting 1/2 coil off the spring?

You'll probably need to cut off more than half a coil but it's better go slowly and proceed by half coils.

First, push down on the edge of the shellplate at station4. If it feels springy, then tighten the shellplate bolt a bit . If after that it still flings powder out as it rotates, then clip off 1/2 coil and retest.

Checked the shell plate and it was fine. Ended up taking about 1.5 coils off, 1/2 a coil at a time. Smooth as silk now. Just loving my new toy!

what spring are you talking about? this is a great find! i didnt know this was correctable

Since this is a pretty old post, but the last poster did not get a response, need to response.

The spring in question is under the detent ball which hold the shell plate at a station.  Remove your shell plate, use a magnet to remove the ball and in the hole is a spring.  Follow the instructions in this thread.

Have a great Fourth of July !

Perfect time to revive an old thread.

I too just received the 650XL my wife bought for my birthday and finished getting it set up last night. Having about 30+ years of single stage experience made for an easy start to progressive loading and the only thing I couldn't work out was the powder splash. I thought to do a quick search and found the answer in this thread.

Thanks. Tomorrow I'll work on double checking the shell plate at station 4 and cutting the spring if necessary.
