Primer frusteration. About to get really mad.
Quote from Reloader on April 9, 2009, 5:00 amI am loading small rifle primers in my 650. The problem I have is that the primers wont seat without a fuss. Every other one wont seat. I have to either
1) Back off the handle, and try again to seat the primer. This process may take 2-3 times of backing off, retrying before it finally seats.
2) Force the handle and let the primers "crunch" into place
3) Grab the .223 shell that is having the primer problem, and while adding pressure to the handle, wiggle it around until it finally seats.I have the shell plate torqued down tight. Its actually causing slight resistance in the indexing. I also have adjusted the station 2 locater to make sure its barely not touching the shell. The shell plate is clean and free of all debris in the tiny "slots" the shell fits in.
I ordered the Dillon spare parts kit and 100% stripped down my press and primer system. Every single nut and bolt. Cleaned, added new parts and grease, and it didnt fix it.
I have had the alignment tool sent to me, and it hasn't helped after following the directions. This is military crimped brass, and has been swaged with the dillon swager. I have the swager set so deep that it takes both hands to sometimes push the shell down in order to swage it. So I think I can rule out that. If I'm not swaging it enough, I'm not sure what else would do it.
It takes me an hour to prime 200 brass. Its absolutley making me mad. My friend has a brand new 650, and he has to slow down or he gets ahead of himself. Which is totally opposite of my experiences.
100% out of ideas. Dillon, I need help!

Quote from Reloader on April 13, 2009, 10:52 pmUhhh, maybe a dumb question but have you removed the primer pocket crimp before attempting to reload the .223 shell?

Quote from Reloader on April 23, 2009, 1:15 pmwhat happens if you take one of the shells you finally got the primer in, fire it, deprime it, and try to put a second primer in the same case?

Quote from Reloader on April 24, 2009, 7:44 amThe shell plate shouldn't be tight. When installing the shell plate, tighten the bolt until it stops (without applying torque), then back off about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. When the machine indexes, you should not feel any resistance.
Also, refer to page 83 on your 650 manual. Try tightening the primer station locator tab set screw so that the brass is held snugly by the primer station locator tab.

Quote from Reloader on April 29, 2009, 6:31 pmI've had my 650 for about 6 months and have the same problem. In fact I have "popped" 3 primers. I went to priming them using a Lee hand primer---no probems since. I also have a Square Deal --- ZERO problems.

Quote from Reloader on June 24, 2009, 12:50 pmI am having the same problem with 38spl, using Federal primers, I would say check your brass but you are using all the same kind, not a different manuf. Have you tried a different manufacturer of primer. I am going to try that let me know what you finally figure out, my email address is colnago@texashwy1.com

Quote from Reloader on January 11, 2010, 3:49 amI had a similar problem with 223 brass from 4 different manufacturers. Even with the pockets swaged, I had this problem. I resize, deprime, swage and clean the brass before priming. The solution for me was to chamfer the mouth of the primer pocket during brass prep. This solved my problems and made priming on the press a big time saver.
