Primer pick-up problem
Quote from Reloader on June 3, 2012, 2:03 pmNew 550b, loaded about 400 rounds. Now it stops picking up new primers. Adjustments are correct and I can pull back on the primer bar...to the stop....and it lines up and the primer drops. I notice when this problem occures the primer bar seems to come back towards the stop...pushing the plastic pin and spring cover very slowly.....like it has slight drag. Removing the coil spring under the bar, moving the bar with my hand shows no drag. Slightly bending the operating rod (#13869) for more push on the bar when operated seems to fix the issue for a few rounds.....I then lowered the operating rod bracket (#13887) so that it is touching the frame of the press, (about an eighth of an inch from where it was installed) to give a bit more push to the bar. Seems to be working, but haven't done many rounds since. Am I having a tension issue with the operating rod.....?

Quote from Reloader on June 3, 2012, 4:53 pmIt appears that the primer bar is loaded (thrust) to one side when operated, causing some drag. I disassembled the priming parts, cleaned (not really dirty), deburred and smoothed ....didn't help. I moved the operating arm bracket a few degrees left of 12 o'clock (sitting @press) to relieve the thrusting and it works amazingly smooth! Adding more tension to the operating bar was overcoming the drag from the side loading.....adjusting the attitude of the rod via the bracket....has the primer bar going back for the primer wicked smooth and quick, with much less tension on the rod. Going to load a few hundred......

Quote from Reloader on June 4, 2012, 10:59 pmThanks for the posting as I just had the same experience today. I have loaded about the same amount of bullets and felt that things were dialed in but today the primers stated to fail to meet the cup. I did the rod bending but didn't like that solution. I also took the primer slide apart to clean and it helped but still seems to catch. I'll look at your solution and hopefully it will work. Sure slows down the process. Thanks again.

Quote from Reloader on June 7, 2012, 3:30 pmLowering the op-rod bracket is the best solution to the slide travel issue. It is also a good idea to check the two small bolts that attach the roller bracket to the underside of the platform. If this assembly is loose, then the upper roller is unable to push the primer slide back far enough.

If you are having a problem, i strongly recommend phoning us for asssitance when you can be in front of the machine. The internet forum is a secondary substitute, but it helps us when you can be our eyes on the machine.
