Primer Pickup Problem
Quote from Reloader on February 22, 2008, 4:47 pmI have dug out my 550 out of storage after about 18 years and started reloading 5.56 because the cost of ammo these days. I have everything working except for the the the primer bar is not picking up primers on every stoke. I have changed the plastic tip on the feeder tube with no change. I moved the primer cup adjustment screw in and out it really seem to make much difference. I finally looked down the feeder tube to align it when the primer cup is all the way back and seems to be working better. But sometimes it will bind up and shoot a primer into never never land when it is all the way back and picks up a primer. Do you have to have a certain amount of primers in the tube for them to feed correctly? It really drove me crazy and don't recall it happening before when I used it in the past.
Thanks in advance
Jeff

Quote from Reloader on February 22, 2008, 7:35 pmWe adjust the stop screw so that the primer cup comes barely past center. the primer doesn't drop in straight, it teeter-totters in. A tiny bit of overtravel coming in should correct this, about 1/2 of the primer cup wall thickness is all.

Quote from Reloader on February 26, 2008, 5:02 pmHaving the set screw back too far allows the primer cup to overtravel the primer excessively. It does need to be in proper position. It wouldn't hurt to check the height, which should be 1.215-1.220", but it doesn't sound like that is the problem.
