Primer Punch Issues
Quote from Reloader on June 16, 2010, 9:16 pmI have had an odd thing occour regarding primer seating and the operation of my XL650 press. When on the downstrock (the ram comming down getting ready to rotate the stations) my press hangs. Now this is only on reloading the 45ACP. I took the whole press down and cleaned it up, relubed, I mean all the way to removing the head that the shell plate bolts too as well as complete dissasembly of the priming system. Upon examnation I noticed groves on the primer plate. I though wow, had some junk in it. Also had noticed the primer indexing arm had bent. Well, I cleanded up and flipped the primer disc, new primer indexing arm installed, thought all was fine. Well the thing starts hanging again. I dissassemble and now the other side of the primer disc is groved. also noticed filings appearing in the primer chute. Upon furhter examination I noticed that the large primer punch looked a little odd. I removed it and comparing it to the small primer punch I saw one glaring difference. The large primer punch pin was not flush with the primer punch body as was the small primer punch assembly.
What makes this all so odd was the press was originally set up by Dillon at the factory for 45ACP, so the large primer punch was already installed on it from the factory and ran great for the first 3,000 rounds. Ordered the 40SW conversion kit and a 9mm conversion kit. The press has probably loaded 4,000 45ACP rounds, 5,000 40SW rounds and just now did 1,500 9mm rounds. Press will be two years old this September. I am curious as to why this just showed up on the last 750 rounds of 45ACP and what would cause the primer punch to be out past flush.
Any thoughts as to why the thing started doing this now? I know if I loosen the large primer punch a little then the press runs smooth. None of these issues are on the 40SW or 9MM. Honestly I never paid that much attention to what the large primer punch looked like before I had the issues.
Also, I did dissassemble the large pistol punch thinking maybe something was hung inside, but did not notice anything. Dang that little clip and gorilla spring are heck on us guys with big hands and fingers. I felt like an elephant trying to thread a needle with the hair off a gnat! Man!
I have been in contact with Dillon support and have a large pistol primer punch and large pistol primer plate on the way. Great support!! Thank You!! AND I LOVE MY DILLON XL650!
Thanks,
Billy in Amarillo

Quote from Reloader on June 16, 2010, 9:37 pmmost likely cause is a shaved-off edge of primer cup is causing the punch to bind in the bushing.

Quote from Reloader on June 17, 2010, 1:55 pmActually Dillon support told me to soak it in solvent. They thought it was gunked up. Well wasn't sure but, bought a gallon of Berrymans with the little basket, dissassembled the primer punch, soaked it for about an hour, put it back together and what do you, it is now flush and works flawlessly in the press. Thansk again Dillon! I'll keep this in mind and soak it in solvent once every 3 or 4,000 rounds.

I ran abrasice cloth over the disk and ground a radius in the disk retaining arm, and have had no problems.

Quote from Reloader on July 4, 2010, 9:59 pmYour not the only one with this problem. After about 5000 30-06 rounds I experienced the same problem. I tried to clean the primer punch without dis-assembly but it never would return flush. So I disassembled it, and found a lot of gunk. Works great now.

Quote from Reloader on July 28, 2010, 3:49 pmHad the same problem only with the small priming punch. Called Dillon and a new punch is on the way. Not wanting to wait for the mail, I disassembled the punch (requires about four hands) and cleaned with solvent. Works like a charm.
