Primer seating issue

primers won't seat well. sometimes they even crunch when going in. Seem to be making the case tilt when inserting. Takes way too much force. CCI primers, loading .223

It's a new machine, maybe 250 rounds loaded at best. Some primers will go in nicely, others not at all. I get small slivers of metal in the primer retreval tray (where the unloaded new primers fall).

I've cleaned it, adjusted it, done everything the book and the blogs here said to do. Something just isn't right. It indexes fine. The primers appear to be lined up in the center of where the casing would be.

Thoughts?

My first thought is military brass with primer crimps.

Mark, you would be sooooo right. I've been sitting here reading everything I can about this and finally saw a youtube that showed the NATO stamp and the crimp. Turns out I have a Super Swage, just never used it, and had no idea I had purchased military cases. I just ran some through the Swage, and the primers loaded perfectly. I learned a lot this weekend. I'm new to this, so although the frustration was high, I'm thrilled to learn more every time I do it. I also disassembled and reassembled my 650, so I learned a lot about that too. :o)  I'll get there!

If you can push the shell in toward the center of the shell plate and then the primer goes in easy, you probably have the same problem I had.

What I did was take pliers and gently bend the little metal finger near the priming station so that it pushes more on the shells as they enter the powder station.

It didn't take much but that solved the problem.

'gently bend the little metal finger near the priming station'
you know there is adjustment screw?  it moves the finger in/out.
See page 39 of the X650 manual.  Great pictures.  Text follows.

Because I load from very small cases to large this is an important adjustment to do each time for conversion.  load safe /l

Step 17) Adjusting the Station 2 Locator Tab
(see note just above Step 16):
The adjustment of the Station 2 locator
tab is best accomplished with the toolhead
removed.
1. Place a case in Station 2.
FIG 194
2. Using a 5/64” Allen wrench, insert it
into the side of the primer feed body
FIG 194. Turn the screw to adjust the
locator tab. A turn clockwise will move
the tab back away from the shellplate
and a turn counter clockwise will
adjust it closer to the shellplate.
FIG 195
3. Adjust the locator tab so that the tab
just clears the case FIG 195. The
objective here is, with the case fully
inserted into the shellplate, the locator
tab should not come into contact with
the case. However, the tab should be
close enough so as to not allow the
case to lose its position in the
shellplate. The distance between the
locator tab and the case should be
about .010” or about the thickness of a
business card.

First thing is to make sure primer pockets are clean. This can be done with an very cheap primer pocket brush. Second thing is to make sure the proper primer part is installed in your machine for the caliber your loading, large or small primer set up. Check your reloading manual if you have question on size. Third if you are reusing military brass say 9mm or 45 acp the primer pocket has to be swagged,( opened wide enough to take open market primers)military brass primer pockets are much smaller than over the counter brass and require this extra step before use. good luck . oh ya Forth todays primers quality control stinks keep trying different brands if all the above didn't help. good luck

Chief,

If your reloading military 223 you will have to either swage the primer pocket or lightly counter bore or ream the crimp from the pocket. Once that is done they run a lot smoother. Unless the reloader primer setter and shell plate do not line up, like one of my 650's. There is no adjustment for the out of alignment and you have to run slow to keep the damaged and wasted primer count low. Hope this helps.
