primer slide return spring length
Quote from Reloader on January 5, 2015, 7:30 pmI have an old Square Deal (not sure if B or not). The primer slide return spring broke and I had a new one sent to me. It is waaay too long, like twice as long as the original.
Was there a change somewhere along the the way to the location of the roll pin that the inboard end of the spring attaches to? The slide can't physically retract all the way in because the new spring binds up due to being too long.
Fixes? a) cut spring in half and try to make new pigtail on the end with needle nose pliers? 2) punch out roll pin and drill a new hole for it further away from the other attaching pin?
anyone dealt with this before?

Quote from Reloader on January 5, 2015, 11:15 pmwell I'll answer my own question-
when the original spring broke it snapped right at the end loop so I grabbed the next coil with some needle nose pliers and made another loop to hook on the roll pin. that worked fine for about 2k rds when it snapped again. I also noticed that the original short spring had much more tension than the new longer one. (maybe it was prone to breaking so it was channged on the "B" redesign?)
I knocked out the roll pin, drilled a new hole about a half inch further out (like in the parts schematic pic) and pressed it back in. But now it hits the ramp on the ram that the brass wheel rides on and the prevents the ram from going up. I broke out the dremel and hacked off about 1/4 inch of excess roll pin and put it all back together.
Happy to report it works like a champ and I quickly knocked out 100 rds of 40 cal. Back in business!!!

Quote from Reloader on July 16, 2018, 3:05 pmThe primer slide return spring length was changed in 1992. The coil count per inch, wire diameter, is all unchanged. You can shorten a current long spring, then bend one coil down to hook over the post.
We ran out of the older short springs over ten years ago.

Quote from Reloader on August 13, 2018, 1:01 pmI had the older design on my Square Deal, which I purchased in 1988. A few years ago, I sent it in for factory maintenance and adjustment, as I was having some problems with .45ACP loads, and hadn't used the machine for a while. When it came back, Dillon had installed the new powder system on my machine. I haven't had any problems, but I do have a spare return spring in my spare parts kit for my SD. Guess I won't need it, though.

Quote from Reloader on August 20, 2018, 9:02 pmHad to make a hardware store visit today so thought I'd see if I could find an extension spring while there. SD38 in my old '94 manual. Then I looked at a newer Dillon pdf file and I don't see that thing with the new part #'s. Looks to me like the newer version uses compression type springs.
Anyhow after getting back home and looking thru my notes it appears back in '17 I purchased some small springs (15/16") with a slightly smaller diameter coil but same length. Must be what I have in there as I'd made a note to enlarge the end loops a bit with an awl. Must have worked I guess. Was a #71 spring in their bin at a Tru Valu hardware.
