Primers Dillon reccomendation

Hi,

I new to reloading and have read posts about primers reloaders reccomend, what i want to know is
what does dillon reccomend.
My press is Brand New Unused (in fact i dont have it yet its in transit to me)

reason i ask is my brother has 6,000 federal small pistol primers i can havecheap hopefully free as he does not reload any longer. but im worried i might damage my new shinny press.

I've read Horror stories of Federal primers igniting in the pimer feed creating "Mt St Dillons"

What is dillons reccomendations and in order of preferance. or is there none provided press is well maintained

i also read that a guy had a primer(s) detonate and damage parts and dillon replaced them under BS warranty. if so i made the right decision to buy a dillon tahts great customer service

thanks for any advice

Federal primers are more semsitive than other brands, but as long as you don't abuse them they load fine. Pretty much any domestic primers will serve you well. Foreign primers do tend to have more dimensional inconsistancies. Just remember, no matter what brand, if something doesn't feel right, stop and find the problem. Do not push on stuck primers with anything heavier than the plastic follower rod.

Federal makes good primers.  Just be sure they will fit the cases you are going to reload.

I reload .45 acp and use "large" pistol primers.  Some cases I get have "small" pistol primer pockets which of course will jam in the reloader.

Primers are the biggest source of accidents when reloading.  However Dillon has a very good priming system, IMHO.  The primer feeding tube is located within a metal pipe.  The loading of the primers is very easy if you follow the instructions in your reloading manual.

My best advice would be that when you get your kit, take everything out and lay it out on a big table and confirm from you instructions that you have all the various parts.  I do this not because I think Dillon will not send me everything, but because it gives me a change to get familar with the various components.

Then, using the assembly and setup instructions (not somebody else's comments) proceed carefully and double check that you have done what Dillon says you were supposed to do.

Reloaders are somewhat complicated machines, but very reliable and easy to use ones if you follow the instrucftions and rules.

Any doubts, stop!  Call Dillon and ask them your question.  Be safe.  Don't guess.

Have fun!

Have been using Federal Primers for years (small) have not had an issue using Dillon 650 except for the feel of some and discovered 9mm had swage on primer pockets. (super swage solved that) However used a Lee 1000 and had terrific experience with 100 primers detonating and braking safety glasses and press.
Nothing quite like this to bring a bit of sanity back into using loading press, yep no more Lee100 have gone all Dillon 650and 550
