primers jamming in pick up tube
Quote from Reloader on May 13, 2018, 4:03 pmHi My outfit is relatively new xl650 . A continuing problem is the primer pick up tubes . After 10 to fifteen primers going in it jams i.e. a primer goes sideways and jams. I have 6 tubes and can only use one. I have tried different primers even miked then to see if there is a difference. I am dead center on top of the primers . I perform the task slowly, all primers all shiny side up . I am now trying to install a straw into the tube after the first primer goes in in an attempt to stabilize the primers. I have attempted to use the long black main tube however it is too heavy and drives primers out. These tubes are not dirty . I am not heavy handed . In my club I am not the only person to experience this difficulty. Could it be the plastic pic up tubes?
Is the inner diameter of the tubes too large. I'm baffled and frustrated .

What size primer tubes are you using? There are two sizes, and if you are picking up small primers with the large tubes, the result would be what you're experiencing. The small tubes use the yellow tips and the large use the green tips. It may be possible that you have the yellow tip on the large tube.
Hope this solves your issue, once you have the 650 going, it's a great machine.

Quote from Reloader on December 19, 2018, 7:37 pmI hope you have found a solution by now. If not, I found that some of the primers are slightly oversized and stend to stick as you described. Dillon replaced the tubes, it continued to happened. My solution was to roll some 1000 grit sandpaper and hone the inside of the tube. Fixed the problem. Hope this helps.

Quote from Reloader on December 19, 2018, 9:42 pmI have been having problems with this also. I have been using Winchester Large Pistol Primers "WLP". LOT # NDL133G.
I am just getting back into reloading after a break of about fifteen years. I have experience with my original Dillion 550 and have literally loaded well over 50,000 rounds over the years with my Dillion. I have NEVER had this problem before. I don't understand it. What is different now?
I found one of the Winchester primes slightly out of round that was giving me problems. I look for it now but still I am having some problems. Thinking it is a Winchester problem but, any suggestion would be great. I have dragged steel wool on a string through the tubes to polish them, applied chemical cleaner, and finally used case lube and blow out the tube with compressed air.

Quote from Reloader on December 20, 2018, 4:48 pmWe regularly measure the height and concentricity of primers. The current production of several brands are more eccentric than they used to be. Oval primers don't feed very well.

Quote from Reloader on March 12, 2019, 4:17 amI had the same problem exclusively with Winchester primers two years ago, several different lots. We checked them carefully and after discussions with Winchester found that Winchester had an issue with several lots of primers being out of round. I switched to different brands of primers and the issue went away. Back to Winnie and the problem resurfaced.
